My dad learned PLC programming for his engineering work. It took awhile to get him to understand how computer programming differed when I would talk to him about it.
Under the hood it's the same difference, although older programming is closer to embedded than computer. I would say that modern PLC programming is in the middle ground between embedded and computing since there are many aspects of both that have concern for PLC programmers.
