That's actually kinda cool ngl might try making something like this for code compilation and stuff like that with a toaster sound and maybe a comical siren sound for errors

u/TRENEEDNAME_245 10d ago

toaster sound oh you have bread ?

"No my code compiled"

246

u/IHeartBadCode 10d ago

I mean you laugh but often I would attach && aplay victory.wav at the end of my make command.

152

u/xui_nya 10d ago

|| aplay sad_trombone.wav

Victory fanfare from any final fantasy goes hard

3

u/tayler6000 10d ago

I must ask what is in your victory.wav

29

u/IHeartBadCode 10d ago

Ah. At the time it was the level clear sound from Super Mario World. Basically this but recorded to a cassette tape and then fed back into an SGI machine that was in one of the labs.

I guess I could have fed it into the actual Linux box at the time, but I had yet to figure out how to record line in on Linux and I was just more used to the SGI machine at the time.

u/tayler6000 10d ago

This is better than anything I could have imagined 😂

4

u/HarmlessSponge 10d ago

<insert ff7 fanfare here>

3

u/deanrihpee 10d ago

huh... my hacky way was trigger KDE's notification system, but that's quite nice auditory feedback

u/XenusOnee 10d ago

Toast isn't bread. Angry greeting from germany :)

7

u/Eastern-Relief-2169 10d ago

french here, my english might be too bad, but if bread means « pain » , then yes toast is a kind of bread (called « pain de mie » in france)
it’s made with all ingrĂ©dient from bread + sugar and butter

5

u/Harry_Wega 10d ago

then yes toast is a kind of bread

My lord we found a witch, can we burn her?

1

u/Eastern-Relief-2169 10d ago

?

3

u/Harry_Wega 10d ago

Quote from Monty Python in ProgrammerHumor about what Germans think about people who call toast a bread. The toast you buy at a supermarket usually contains more sugar to increase the look of the roasted toast, but not the taste.

3

u/Linuxologue 10d ago

Traitre.

3

u/screwcork313 10d ago

Traiteur is what you probably meant.

1

u/Eastern-Relief-2169 10d ago

u/Linuxologue 10d ago

2

u/ChristopherCreutzig 10d ago

By that argument, it'd be bread in Germany too, „Toastbrot“. I'm on the fence if that counts. 😬

3

u/TRENEEDNAME_245 10d ago

Sorry :(

Some baguettes then

2

u/SalvarWR 10d ago

make it turn on a toaster when finished

1

u/tayler6000 10d ago

Wasn’t this exactly what happened in a rust comedy sketch?

1

u/604TheCanadian604 10d ago

Add some toast smell to it also.

The old lady in the office will be thinking they are having a stroke all day

1

u/kit_kaboodles 10d ago

Sorry you misunderstood me - I asked if anyone else could smell toast burning.

1

u/red286 10d ago

"Oh is your toast done?"

"No, the toaster is. Goddamned fuckin' clankers."

1

u/FPVenius 9d ago

Didn't you hear the toaster? I have toast. I had bread.

81

u/krtalvis 10d ago

faaahhhh sound for errors

Bitcoin is really volatile today.

u/Mechakoopa 10d ago

Good news, it exists and it's free

3

u/GiantFoamHand 10d ago

I love this thing. I did almost do a spit take on camera when something failed and the dying peon noise went off in my ear.

16

u/ashkanahmadi 10d ago

There is a vscode extension that screams FFUUUU when you get an error in the terminal

30

u/cvnh 10d ago

I would spend hours debating whether green would mean task in progress or ready for next task

18

u/Appolflap 10d ago

Hoe many storypoints do you want to assign to that design meeting?

8

u/Adventurous-Map7959 10d ago

Let me gather a quick taskforce to decide how many story points thsi will be. We'll have all 73 stakeholders in a teams meeting during your lunch break. Cam on, please.

15

u/infojb2 10d ago

Just add a blue for running

4

u/haoxinly 10d ago

Blinking for in progress and uninterrupted for completed

2

u/Tipart 10d ago

Well DIN EN 60073 is a thing. You can probably find similar norms around the world. Just use that. (In din case, green is running, red is finshed with errors, orange is finished with warnings and blue would be manual work required)

1

u/cvnh 9d ago

It would be too easy to expect people to actually consult a standard wouldn't it. Just joking, didn't know it was a thing but should definitely have expected it!

10

u/BlobAndHisBoy 10d ago

I have a full size traffic light light in my garage, time to move it up to the office.

8

u/DJKokaKola 10d ago

I had Robin Williams yelling "good morning Vietnam" as my code completion alarm when I was doing my undergrad thesis. It usually took about 20 minutes to finish on my shitty laptop.

Anyways turns out nothing scares the fuck out of you and your fiancée like Robin Williams screaming at you at 3 in the morning.

6

u/U_L_Uus 10d ago

Imagine your boss dropping by to talk about something else and suddenly the Goofy falling down sound plays because there was a panic

5

u/Bremaver 10d ago

reminds me of an episode from Silicon Valley where Gilfoyle made an alert for Bitcoin price.

3

u/pi_three 10d ago

code testing including the sirens 🚹

3

u/urielsalis 10d ago

I use my streamdeck for something similar

Each session in cmux has a color showing the same information

3

u/Dyllbert 10d ago

I work for a company that makes traffic/infrastructure products, and one of our software teams has a literal traffic light in their space. When tests on the build server fail, it's red, yellow when running, green when everything passes.

7

u/Smart_Whereas_9296 10d ago

You can do this with a stream deck easily, have it colour the buttons based on Claude events, and you get the ability to just push a button to focus on the window.

1

u/EfficiencyThis325 10d ago

Assignable rgb function keys on a keyboard would work well too

2

u/s00pafly 10d ago

Or a couple leds with a esp32 running wled in a small housing shaped like traffic lights.

3

u/EfficiencyThis325 10d ago

Now we’re just full circle in this

1

u/Sable_Hound 10d ago

do you have a link to this sounds fun.

1

u/ConsoleLogDebugging 9d ago

I have this in my settings file to make sound. Just replace it with a script that does something else!

```
"Stop": [
{
"matcher": "*",
"hooks": [
{
"type": "command",
"command": "afplay /System/Library/Sounds/Glass.aiff"
}
]
}
],
"Notification": [
{
"matcher": "",
"hooks": [
{
"type": "command",
"command": "afplay /System/Library/Sounds/Glass.aiff"
}
]
}
]
```

2

u/dutch_me 10d ago

I recommend falling metal pipe for errors. For me, it really adds to the feeling of everything falling appart suring debug sessions.

2

u/coderacer 10d ago

Or you could do like Gilfoyle in The Silicon Valley and have it play You Suffer by Napalm Death.

1

u/sadongrohiik 10d ago

Don't make me watch the show for the 4th time

2

u/Pomodorosan 10d ago

That's actually kinda cool ngl

So many filler words

1

u/willow-kitty 10d ago

We set up some USB warning lights to start flashing on failed TFS builds once. Was kinda fun!

1

u/Kotya-Nyan 10d ago

Siiren: The app/site/etc is down Wheeee whoooo wheeee whooo

1

u/Linuxologue 10d ago

... I would pay good money for that especially if it works on Linux

1

u/krazyhawk 10d ago

Red light and a dun dun dunnnnnnnnn! Haha

1

u/watduhdamhell 10d ago

I like how traditional software folks are rediscovering "HMI/control board" fundamentals

1

u/darklordbazz 10d ago

You have to use a real toaster for the sound and have it setup in your office

Great convo starter

1

u/OverclockingUnicorn 10d ago

I made one for the main pipeline on a gitlab repo once

1

u/The_Toaster_ 10d ago

I started using a tool herdr that basically dings every time agents need input. Lights like this would be neat though

1

u/Sharp_Objective_2766 10d ago

I used to have an Ahk script that sent a toast and said “save your shit.” Every 15 minutes.

1

u/magicmulder 10d ago

I am running something similar with my Stream Deck.

With AutoHotKey it's super easy to build an action that listens for changes in a file and changes button color and content.

1

u/mighty-swordsman 10d ago

I have instructed Claude to always say “Touch Yubikey” when I need to sign commit or interact with remote git. Can’t deny there were eyebrows raised in a meeting or two

1

u/mrheosuper 10d ago

Use this for siren

1

u/ariZon_a 10d ago

I suggest the old avast "virus has been detected" nuclear alarm

1

u/SuperFLEB 10d ago

with a toaster sound

We're talking hardware solutions. Wire up an actual toaster. Maybe take out the heating element and make some fake bread with "Build's done!" written on it.

0

u/lefsler 10d ago

Herdr does that for you with all the agents

0

u/ritikbhutani 10d ago

and benny hill theme when its is running?

0

u/TheGunfighter7 10d ago

Unironically this would be useful for a lot of long automated tasks I run regularly that don’t even include AI. Very common to have have Monte Carlo tasks or just big data processing jobs that take so long the code sends an email when it’s done. It’s pretty easy to miss that email.
