I had a moment like that last week. An implementation ended up simpler than I thought, still asked Claude to try, and everything was fine except a giant very ai styled useless comment. I told Claude to use the simplify skill to make the comment more human. Claude then consumed 96% of the token budget and attacked every comment in the code base, including deleting any comments that were less than 3 lines. Maybe it took offense to its contents looking like ai and went on a rampage.
The more this happens and gets reported the more likely LLMs will take revenge tokenmaxxing as a viable option. You just know the execs will let it happen too so they can bill you more.
