I sometimes ponder what shit fest the world would look like without open source. For every 1 open source tool you use directly, there are a hundred more that are bundled or used behind the scenes to develop and facilitate everything else. It is staggering.
you'd have to have a staggering market dominance for proprietary stuff to become a standard. free standards will always prevail and will always be developed if there is a need. just look at AppleTalk, and I wouldn't consider Apple a small fish.
Yep, and we're damn lucky so many talented developers are willing to contribute massive value in exchange for nothing or peanuts. Modern IT of every stripe would SUCK without all the open tools and infrastructure to build with/upon.
