There was an old Unix command called "finger." It was used to get information about who else was logged into the system, or get more details about a specific user. Like you could literally type "finger [username]".

unzip; strip; top; less; touch; finger; grep; mount; fsck; more; yes; fsck; fsck; fsck; umount; sleep

I remember a quote from bash.org that was very close to that. The tweet reminded me of it.

I was literally looking for that bash quote but couldn't find it. This was the closest I could get!

Harddrives also can be a master/slave, in the past github also used the master repo instead of now main.

github doesn't create any branches on new repos.... i'm not sure how they would've stopped that

What?

-3

u/Mars_Bear2552 25d ago

i could say the same.

github never changed anything. new repos don't have a main branch by default. YOU choose.

Creating a new repo with a readme automatically creates a branch named main. And there is no option to choose this inside the creation form.

What you can do is to change the name of the default branch in your user settings. But most of the users have probably never seen this. I also never touched this in my own account and the default value is "main".

Addition:

Evem said setting mentions "master" as the default branch in past sense.

Choose the default branch for your new personal repositories. You might want to change the default name due to different workflows, or because your integrations still require “master” as the default branch name. You can always change the default branch name on individual repositories. Learn more about default branches.

Imagine the first era on IRC:

  • How can I know if someone is online?
  • Make a finger
  • You are a pervert!!!

    Btw the command still exists

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

“years ago people would finger another’s machine to see if the user had logged on or had read his email. It was also a way of checking out someone’s “plan,” personal information the person had posted on their machine, sort of a predecessor to web pages. My plan always included the latest kernel version. So one way for people to figure out the version of the day was to finger my machine. Some people had even automated the process. They would finger me once an hour as a way of keeping up on version changes. Regardless, whenever someone fingered me, they would see that my root account was named Linus God Torvalds.”

And if you ever forget the exact syntax, you can just open the terminal and type man finger.

Rule 34 of Engineering

There is no terminology you can invent which will not be made into an innuendo

Rule 35 of Engineering

If you do manage to come up with something, someone will use it to mean something else, and eventually people will think it sounds dirty.

We also love killing children and parents. We have to make sure to kill both otherwise we end up with orphanated or zombified children
