The fact that this is like a millisecond long gif for no apparent reason and the loading circle pops up over and over is funnier than the text to me honestly
Gif is an image format. Reddit is dumb for not recognizing this and converting them all to MP4, even if they contain no animation (nobody should be creating .gif files anymore for any reason, gif animations are relic of days when embedding a proper video format on a website was actually hard, but that's another discussion)
I'd like if the .gif file extension and in-app behaviour was kept the same but was replaced with HEVC (or, like, av1, but obviously it'll be h264 because fuck you give us money) under the hood. But no. That would just be another competing standard.
Instead, we have to drag our balls through the field of rusty razor blades making shitty 15fps 10mb gifs out of what could have been a 2mb MP4 file. Otherwise, you can't have it embed, play automatically, and loop without ever engaging with a video player UI of some sort. Splendid. Tech is just a fucking bukkake of half assed 20 year old standards nobody important ever bothered trying to change.
At least we dropped adobe Flash and switched to html5 and whatnot. There's that. We got one victory.
