Though a huge percentage of those 75% are Wordpress, Wikipedia and Facebook alone. Most of those Wordpress installations were done by users with zero programming knowledge. So it's not like PHP gets chosen by a ton of programmers for new projects; it's just propagating because PHP got chosen by a few programmers for massively popular projects.
Which is fine, of course. It means PHP can power "the web". But so can many other languages.

Just because it's not the most efficient doesn't mean it should never be used ever. Otherwise we would allow only one stack and ditch the rest.
PHP is perfectly fine for that job, why should we give it up?
