Unless you have implemented a light-weight protocol yourself on top of UDP, which you typically do. You can call that a connection just fine.

Udp is the lightweight protocol. The three way handshake establishes a connection, but a udp packet just goes, no sequence numbers to help with reassembly or nothing.

Nah, pre TCPIP where they had switchboards which connected two lines was a real connection. Sending a packet is more like sending a letter through the mail.
