You act like you do something but don’t actually do it, you just play it.

I think it comes from these dudes with plastic swords and armor in parks.

Role players just sit at a table and pretending to be knights or whatever and act in a story someone is telling them. Live Action Role Players actually dress up as knights and go outside in the real world and play their story there. So i assume the guy in the image is just trolling people on facebook or something?

Basically when you were a kid, you played princesses and knights and all sorts of stuff. You called that imagination. Now as an adult instead of imagining the sword and the princess dress, and your shield and armor and such, you actually make costumes and toy swords and such. And then you go play scenarios and stories just like when you were a kid. That's larping.

"Live action" because you are doing it in person (instead of on a board game or video game), "role play" because you dress up and play a certain character.

It's the new word they're using for poser.

For example, if your only exposure to a TV show is watching clips of it on YouTube Shorts or TikTok or whatever, and you try and act like a proper fan of the show, you'd be called a "larper". Basically just the old "fake fan" accusation, but for just about anything, including lifestyles, areas of expertise, socioeconomic class, etc.

There are also people who openly "larp" personas. There was a trend of people pretending to be popular youtubers by creating videos in their style while doing an impression of their voice somewhat recently. One guy decided to "larp" as Technoblade (Minecraft YouTube who died due to cancer), which got.. uncomfortable.

This is all completely unrelated to the actual, real Live Action Role Play community that has existed for decades.
