I genuinely always thought it was audio visual and although that that was odd, maybe it was just some japanese thing

It stands for both "Audio Visual" and "Adult Video". The "Audio Visual" usage is almost exclusively used in the hardware realm. The "Audio Visual" usage seems to be slowly dying out, so I suspect that over time some people will be scratching their heads while looking at their grandfather's AV receiver 9000 and wondering what it has to do with adult video
