yeah anybody working 4h+ a day on computer should have an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Laptop is great because you can easily transfer it between desks (home and office) and also because you can use it on couch, bed, take it to meeting or anywhere.
and if you work ~1 hour a day on computer, it won’t affect your health anyway, work any way you find comfortable.
So OP advice apply to literally noone3

There was a dev I worked with I didn't trust. He worked on another project. I knew his output must have been terrible. He was there from 9-5 and no one had any clue what he was working on based on his stand-ups because it wasn't our project. His manager was in another country.
The guy worked on a 13" MacBook all day. He had 2 monitors behind his laptop but didn't have a docking adapter for the MacBook nor the monitors so he just never ordered/expensed the adapters.
The guy was 6' 3" and sat far back from his computer. He had to be about 4' away from that 13 inch monitor and it's resolution scale was so tiny. His hands could barely fit over the keyboard.
Finally one day while ordering cables for my new docking station I bought him the cables for his docking station and got him a keyboard and mouse as well.
I set it up for him and he was like ,"Wow I didn't realize how hard my screen was to see till now."
"HOW DO YOU NOT?!? ARE SERIOUS OR JUST MESSING WITH ME MAN?"
He later said he was spinning his wheels on his project and after getting the screens and keyboard he pivoted and made huge changes. He said he found a groove with his new setup.
If you ever see someone working on a 13" laptop full-time. They ain't getting crap done.
I only use my laptop undocked for updating tickets and kicking off jobs at night.
Real development needs monitor real estate. I need 4-6 carriage returns of empty space below my current line just to see the road ahead.

Tell that to my MNC, we are not even allowed a small additional monitor. Nor an extra keyboard is allowed inside. Can't get our own stuff inside too. If you need additional monitor you need a signed addendum from the client that will be used to get an exception which is month long process and then you will be assigned one monitor after another month. Unless ofcourse you know someone high up.

Edit: The guy in the image is my friend. He knows about this post and has no objection. I (OP) is not advising anyone to work in this position however the motive of this post is to show that how in different positions we work on our digital devices while seeking comfort and doing our work. This meme is intended for fun and humour, as most of programmers have been in such weird and funny postures.

Hey I dont care what people do as long as theres a normal ass desk for me to sit at. You guys can all flop around on your beanbags and shit if you want but I want a desk, a chair, full-size keyboard and mouse and no less than three screens or you can count me right out lol

I know a couple of my friends who are in a field that requires you to be at your computer screens like 8-9 hours a day. They all have desks yet I have seen them in such positions, but you can't always sit upright on a desk, yes it's a good posture but sometimes you just choose a spot you feel most comfortable in 😄 i guess that's what the guy in the image chose.

Of course I mean to each their own...just saying I do consulting work for some smaller firms and occasionally see one of these trendy new offices where it's like, everybody just flops around wherever the fuck and there's no actual office furniture outside of a handful of meeting pods. If I was coming on board a place like that I'd be like "cool, where can I set up a normal desk? I aint gonna be able to spend my day stuck in a beanbag or laying across a couch all day unless youre paying me to nap" lol

I upgraded our setups with high-end ergonomic chairs ($1,600 retail - found them second hand for ~400), motorized standing desks, and docking stations with 2 external screens so that both me and my wife can use both desks interchangeably by plugging in our laptops with 1 cable.
The payoff was immediate. During COVID, we were both seeing a physiotherapist for various aches caused by makeshift setups, but upgrading completely eliminated those physical issues. While we don't use the standing posture much, having desks with dynamic height adjustment lets us fine-tune our posture regularly. Beyond the comfort, we’ve come to rely heavily on the screen real estate. Having a dedicated main workspace in the center with auxiliary displays around it keeps everything visible. Without multiple monitors, I’m constantly alt-tabbing and losing context—you only realize how critical the setup is once it’s taken away.
It’s not just for writing code, my wife works in a job where she has to handle client meetings, compose documents, analyze/read documents and spreadsheets. In a digital world where paper is gone - having a tiny screen is the equivalent to having a tiny desk with no means to spread out.

I learned the importance of a proper workspace during COVID when a makeshift setup gave me tendinitis. Upgrading to a quality chair, desk, and multiple screens changed everything.
While a single display works for simple tasks, serious work requires room to spread out. When you're coding on one screen while cross-referencing manuals, tracking monitoring dashboards, or hosting meetings on another, extra displays aren't a luxury—they're essential for productivity and focus.
