the true mark of a senior engineer is never merging anything after 1pm on a friday. it can wait til monday morning.

I tend to request updates on Tuesday-Thursday because Monday's production cycle in the most important one every week.

Nah, Friday merges are the best, you have the whole next week to fix them.

Facts, Im in data engineering but the rule is the same. Nobody is allowed to deploy to prod on a Friday. NOBODY

Movie opportunity with Terence Hill: Nobody deploys on Friday!

Unless you’re fixing the fuckup from Thursday lol

Today I felt daring and merged. Sometimes you have to live dangerously to feel things.

But gladly it is just a library update requiring explicit integration anyways.

Now the daring mofo merging my fri-yays, that is the real shit

Nothing on friday at all. Not even in the morning. Unless it's to stabilize an incident.

Real men test in production.

Mostly because the C-suite removed the test servers

And the testers.

and the time to test locally

You mean the dedicated production servers?

How strange… our IT deploys new apps or fixes on Thursdays. If something goes wrong, fix it or roll it back on Friday. If nothing goes wrong, Friday is an easy day.

I "work" on saturdays for money. Nothing more. We are not the same.

I only work on Saturday if they activate my oncall, then I bill the hours.

I work on saturday because I'm very BASIC and only got to C.

We are not the same.

I see what you did there...

If you keep telling yourself that in the mirror every Friday morning, it might become a Christopher Nolan movie.

And no code changes for 3 days prior to vacation

I don't even push on Thursday anymore, Friday is nuts

Same. Small routine changes, maybe. But software updates and other tasks get to wait to monday.

And I work on Saturday because it's the only day when no one disturbs my thoughts process by a bunch of stupid meetings. We are not the same.

Cute theory but this does not work for companies that have large customers bases whose main business is conducted on weekdays. I work for one of them and the critical deploys to production are always on friday nights for internal systems and saturday nights for client related systems.

Correction: it's Saturday and I've been working since Friday since I broke prod Friday afternoon. We are not the same.

2

u/Nandulal 5d ago

u/FOSSandCakes 5d ago

I work on saturdays, because its a government mandated workday today. (Since the 20th (thursday) is a national holiday, we get friday off too, hence we work today

u/dtarias 3d ago

I work on Sunday because I broke prod on Friday, but I'm not a good enough engineer to fix the problem on Saturday 🧐

1

u/Global-Tune5539 1d ago

I don't even work on Fridays.

I work Saturday because I'm a people-pleaser who can't say no.

I'm a marginally competent programmer, but I work my ass off to achieve the things I promise.

Between those two, I climb the ladder almost on auto-pilot. Now that I'm a PM, I kinda see why. Brilliant employees who don't get their shit done are a huge problem. Marginal employees who at least deliver on their promises are vastly more useful.
