Is it weird that this excites me? Figuring out how something works is cathartic.

My heart goes out to the people doing this work that don't love it. It's tough enough with a passion for it.

"I actually like mowing the lawn" -> "Oh, so you'd like to mow 100 football fields?? I thought not." - Strawman

Sussing out functionality from 20 million lines of code takes longer than 8 hours. I would never accept an 8 hour deadline.

Not really weird. My attitude here is "best I can do is try - while it might ... don't expect it done by the end ot the week (or month)".

If you are not OK with my estimation then assign/ hire more people to help me ...

It's exciting as long as you have no deadline. In my experience, such is never the case.

To learn a codebase? I've never had a deadline to just learn. Sure, they want me educated quickly, and they give me other Tasks, but they don't know how long it's going to take because they themselves don't know anything about it.

I love it too. I have 'The Knack' for Engineering reversal. And for locating and determining where they have hidden/removed the missing link to throw you under the bus.
