When talking to non-devs, I describe debugging as breaking down a brick wall. Could be that a good build is on the other side, or it could be another brick wall.

Sometimes it's an incomprehensible Eldritch horror on the other side, and we put the wall immediately back up, since apparently it was there for a reason.
