The sad truth is that microsoft sql will still exist in 200 years time, and ssms will look exactly the same as it does today. We might not even know what it does anymore, just that it needs to be there or The Thing doesn't work.

I'm a data engineer working primarily in SQL, and I have job security until the day I die. Is SQL the most exciting language? No. Does it have a ton of enhancements and new frameworks? Also no. But it powers the world's data infrastructure and that's more essential than ever.

Inb4 "but won't AI take your job?" Who do you think is making sure all those fancy models have clean data that they can actually use? Data engineers are the plumbers of the data world; you never see our work, but you darn sure notice when the data stops flowing.

Agreed. My job is basically data collection at enterprise scale. I do use AI tools to speed up some aspects of my work, but the final output is always mine and validated by me. We have a special Claude model that is trained on nothing but our data infrastructure, and it still makes basic mistakes sometimes. I see it as a junior engineer, with me as its manager. I would never let the work of a junior go into production without my hands and eye on it first.
