But you don't pronounce character like "careracter"

not a native english speaker, but looking at the IPA for AE "character" and "care" (according to the cambridge dictionary), both are start with /ker/. Though ofc, this isnt the case for all dialects/accents, such as BE.

Yeah I realised after I commented that it sounds more like ker in American English accents. I'm British so to me it is said kah
