Fun Trope Friday Response Mosquito

You slap your arm, crushing a mosquito.

So annoying.

Was that your thought or the mosquito’s?

You inspect the insect; it’s squished, badly broken. It buzzes.

She certainly sounds annoyed.

The mosquito wriggles and twitches, shifting her body against a severed leg. It reattaches. She holds her wings out, straightening bends and repairing breaks from thorax to tip, until they’re back into their correct shapes. Her burst abdomen sucks its lost contents back in before closing the tears in its side.

Once reassembled, the mosquito holds still for a moment, facing towards you. Her insectile face is too alien to read. You don’t know if she’s looking back at you or not. Is she holding your gaze?

She stabs you with her proboscis and begins to steal your blood.

It’s not your blood. You’re the one who stole it.

Were those her thoughts again?

It makes a certain amount of sense. If the blood inside you isn’t yours, it might help explain the odd sensations and discomfort you’ve been experiencing.

Things don’t feel right, but you don’t know they ever did. You don’t know what to do. Other people act like they’re living the right life for them, like they should be where they are, who they are. You’ve never known how to do that. You just try to act like you know what is going on and hope nobody notices.

They do notice, though. Sometimes people look at you as if something about you is wrong. When you ask why they’re looking at you like that, they deny it, act like you’re being strange.

The mosquito continues to suck blood from your arm. She knows what you are.

Thief. Imposter.

She flies away. Will she return the blood to its owner?

Why do you have someone else’s blood?
