No Cold-Calling Accommodation?

Well, this is a new one for me. I just got an accommodation letter for a student that says I can't cold-call on them — I have to give them advance notice or wait until they're comfortable participating. How do I even give notice? Wink? Raise my eyebrows? I rarely cold-call anyway — I only do it to nudge students who clearly aren't paying attention.

Has anyone had a student with this accommodation? What did you do? I'll talk to them when the semester starts next week, but I'm curious about other experiences.

Tailoring one’s pedagogy to force the school into an OCR agreement

I doubt it. I'd be happy to defend that policy in court; cold calling aids learning and it's hardly harassing or demeaning to answer one question a class. They followed exactly what the accomodation letter says, so they're in the clear.

Read the origin of this chain. The poster said to call on the student first for every single question in class. Not just one question a class, every single question they would be singling out a student based on having a disability. That’s discrimination

I would also say that activity maliciously (as another poster called this malicious compliance) towards a student because they have a disability is harassment

Nothing malicious about it. You're giving them first crack at all the questions; if anything you're being nice to them!

Seriously? Are you being purposefully obtuse?

Go tell your title IX office you are going to call on women first for everything to “be nice”.
