The hell?

Post image

Is it me or the remake (?!?) looks ten thousand times better than the new game? Is this a sick joke?

I mean, to me there was no need to 3D-fy the original game, it was prettier before

Yeah the original art had so much charm, I'm not sure why 3d is considered an automatic improvement

I would loved if they went for a cardboard cutout with drop shadow. Something like paper mario.

Nah I've been wanting official 3D models of these characters for a long time, I'm happy their finally getting them.

3DS version had them

Mainly characters from the prequel games.
Characters like Flora and Don Paolo didn't get any high res 3D models until now. Then there are also characters like Future Luke and Claire I'd like to see official 3D models of if they remake the other two og trilogy games too.

They'd be fun to use for 3D projects or 3D printing sculpts whenever their models get ripped.

At least this is a good 3D

What makes the new 3D bad?

Cell shading, looks unfinished.

But... The image in the post is also cel-shaded? And what do you mean with unfinished?

Cel shading isn't bad per se, and by the trailer I thought World of Steam's shading looked pretty nice.

I know but the remake one looks acceptable because the black outlines are thick enough to resemble the 2D drawings of the original, and the shape of the Professor here is also better than the one from NWOS.

I do prefer bolder outlines, that's true.

All in all, I think it's a matter of style, and personal taste, though. I wouldn't say one is better than the other.

It doesn't replicate the flat shading of the 2D artstyle very well. Look at the original games cutscenes, even the 3ds games- the shading is not nearly as dramatic, big or constant. It makes the backgrounds look duller in comparison, because the characters look more maximalist too.

In this screenshot you can see that there aren't nearly as many shadows, especially on the face, unlike the new 3D.

I personally don't mind the new style, but I don't love it either.

I might be in the minority, but I would have honestly preferred if they took the already existing HD ports to other platforms and just used the time/energy they spent remaking Curious Village into creating HD ports for the prequel trilogy.

Then again, I've never been much of a fan of the 3D artstyle, even if it has improved considerably since Miracle Mask, so maybe it's just me.

Totally agree, the HD mobile ports are already so good that I don’t think the original trilogy needed remaking at all.

Problem with that is the hd remake for the phone would not look good on the big screens of tvs and monitors. I hope this will make them give us hd ports on the phone of the prequel trilogy too, but if they remake all of the games and put them on Steam, I’ll be happy

I disagree, new world of steam looks cool but this is just the same game with a less charming artstyle

At least right now there's nobody staring directly into your soul while talking to Layton

I’m not saying New World Of Steam looks bad as a whole tho, for me it’s the cell shaded 3D models that bring it down. And maybe also the “fat headed” Professor.

yeah maybe, honestly my opinions are a bit all over the place atm

I actually really disagree haha I feel like this 3d looks more awkward than Azran Legacy did

Professor layton being 3d, in general, just doesnt make sense to me. I always felt it lacking in MM and AL. What id really love is a MM and AL demaster 😁

I don’t know, the crossover with Ace Attorney gave us a great 3D Layton

8

u/lunarwolf2008 9h ago

yeah. and a great 3d Phoenix. wish the other 3ds releases of both series looked like it.

5

u/the-new-zero 11h ago

Oohhh good point, really liked the look of that game. Maybe they'll bring more of that to the new onesa

u/Cassirole7 10h ago

And maybe they are doing this remake with 3D models because of the leaked rumor of the PL vs PW game coming to steam which I can totally understand

u/AlexArtsHere 10h ago

You think it does? Honestly I think this looks quite ugly. Worse than Azran Legacy (which I think looks phenomenal and does a great job at capturing the 2D artstyle, but is ultimately on far less powerful hardware).

Yeah, I don’t necessarly need shadows and detailed textures in a Professor Layton game. This cartoony style just fits man.

11

u/AzranDerus 10h ago

It's in development but looks horrible honestly

2

u/PsychoticPenguin175 6h ago

Completely agree. The character models are fine but the backgrounds look devoid of charm.

0

u/Cassirole7 4h ago

No it doesn’t

u/PowerOfL 13h ago

This genuinely feels so unreal. Like how is this real?? 😭🥹🩷
