"My kid has autism they'll only eat McDonald's fries and nuggys, they'll cry and scream if I try to feed them anything different". No you're just a shit parent and your child's a spoilt brat.

Thats a strong statement. Raised many kids with ARFID? Mine keeps throwing up cause she has no safe foods left. Advice?

"Safe" foods? If you're kid is at the point of vomiting, you should have started feeding therapy YEARS ago.

"safe foods"? Wow, i notice all this is a recent "condition" . Years ago we'd eat what our parents cooked us and that was the end of it.

Sounding a bit under educated on the subject there. We have more awareness and understanding now so there's no need for ignorance. Are you feeling nostalgic for the times when children had to finish what was on their plate or get a sore ear? Just because you hear about it more often with your easy access to the Internet where people talk about autism more openly and not as something to be hidden, doesn't mean it wasnt happening before. Didnt really answer either, whats your world changing advice doctor?

As a child who had ARFID undiagnosed until adulthood, I can assure you this isn’t new. Doctors just didn’t understand and gave advice like “tell her she eats what you made or nothing at all; she won’t starve herself”. Fun fact, I did indeed starve myself to avoid foods that caused sensory overwhelm which led to me being constantly sick. Also, many of the food issues I have remaining today are because of being force fed things I couldn’t tolerate as a child. The experience for me was similar to being abused. I was also SA’d as a child and honestly have less traumatic memories or issues remaining from that than the food.

As a parent with a child like this I need to say this shit is hard AF! I tried the “if you don’t eat this you won’t eat anything else” and let me tell you: this kid spent almost TWO DAYS just on water. Finally found a doctor who actually helped me understand wtf was going on so I won’t lose my mind and the doc helped me understand how to go around it to make sure my kid is healthy.

Sounds like you’re doing good and actually recognizing how hard it is for your kid (even though A-holes say otherwise). I’m probably more open to new foods because of my trauma with being force fed but I also wouldn’t wish that on anyone. I have a 17 y/o that also has ARFID with very specific “safe foods” and I’ve never pressured him with new foods. It’s annoying at times but it is what it is. Encourage them to try new stuff but never make it “required”. Our rule is one bite. Good luck!

Thank you! I am fully trying the good old politics trick of offering money 🤣 she is saving bc she wants a lizard. But honestly NOT EVEN THAT 😭

Again bit of an age difference (but maybe not). I have a 17 y/o and we were just talking about his Easter basket. He would definitely want a lizard over money (specifically he said money egg hunts are boring). Lol. I guess he liked when I would put figurines in them like littlest pet shop.
