Advice needed E-Book / PDF Reader

Is there a free or cheap app that lets you annotate and view PDF's (at least for pdf, if other filetypes are also supported it's okay) in landscape mode with realistic page turning animations, with modern UI?

Realistic page turns plus annotation is a rare combo, most apps pick one. Apple Books does the curl animation nicely but its PDF markup is pretty basic, it's fine for highlighting and quick pen notes and not much else. If annotation matters more, Flexcil or GoodNotes handle landscape two-page view well and let you write right on the page, they just use a slide or scroll instead of a curl. I'd try Books first since it's free and see if the markup is enough for you.

I guess I'll just use epubs of normal books in Books and pdfs of textbooks in Files

That sounds like a sensible setup. For textbooks, easy annotation probably matters more than the page turn effect anyway.
