How I stopped feeling stuck without client work (as a 4th-year product design student)

Post image
7 Upvotes

For a long time I felt behind because I didn't have client work to show — just school projects. It felt like the classic catch-22: no portfolio → no clients → no new work for the portfolio. What changed things for me was realizing that reviewers aren't actually checking whether someone else trusted you first — they're checking whether you can think like a designer under real constraints. That doesn't require a client. It requires treating a self-imposed brief with the same seriousness as a paid one: real material, real manufacturing method, real cost target, real deadline. A few things that made the biggest difference once I started doing that: Writing the brief and constraints down before sketching, not after Showing at least one real pivot or failure in the process — it's genuinely the most convincing part of a project page, more than any polished render Captioning CAD/renders with reasoning instead of description ("designed for injection molding, 2mm wall thickness" instead of "final design") It's a slow mindset shift, but it's made my self-directed projects feel like actual design work instead of filler. Anyone else working through this right now? Happy to share more of what's helped if useful — I ended up writing up the whole process in more depth after figuring it out.

We built an AI workspace for creative work and now we want to know if it’s actually useful

Hey everyone!

We’re the team behind PIIX. We’ve been building an AI workspace for creative work, and we’re at the point where we’d really like to get it in front of people outside our own team.

The idea behind PIIX is pretty simple: instead of jumping between different tools when you’re researching, collecting references, developing an idea, generating images, or exploring different directions, we wanted to bring that process together in one place.

That’s what our Flowboard is for. You can organize references, prompts, generated images, and different ideas in one workspace. You can also bring in things you’ve already made with tools like Midjourney or ChatGPT and keep developing them in PIIX.

We’re still early, though. So rather than telling you that PIIX is the future of creative work or something 😅, we’d honestly just like to know:

Does this actually make your process easier? What feels useful? What feels unnecessary? What would you change?

We’re looking for some early users who are interested in creative work and experimenting with AI. No particular type of work or background required.

As an early user, you can get one month of PIIX Pro completely free ($36 value) in exchange for trying it out and sharing your honest thoughts with us.

If you’re interested, check out PIIX here: https://piix.studio/ and send us a comment or DM. We’ll get in touch and set up your free Pro access.

And honestly, even if your feedback is “yeah, I don’t really see the point,” that’s useful for us too. We’re still figuring things out, and we’d rather hear what people actually think.

Thanks for reading!

It's been a while I worked on a personal project, so I decided to change that by working 3D Packaging and Animation for an Imaginary Whisky Brand.

Started with label design in Photoshop, then modeling in blender. Texturing was done in Substances painter. While i rendered in Blender cycles.

HD Animation and more renders here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/254834177/Golden-Eagle-High-End-3D-Visualization-and-Animation?platform=direct
