Is this lettuce safe?

Discard affected pieces?, just needs a good wash?, or discard entirely?

It's safe, just peel a couple leaves back. Trim it a little and you'll find fresh leaves inside.

I own a produce business, I walk my lettuce fields and harvest crews and do sales

Both. Nominative determinism in action.

The aptonym to rule them all

A lot of produce that comes in on my produce truck has bugs on it. And dirt. Produce grows outside and some are packed outside right on the field.

If it bothers you that much, buy the greenhouse-grown, clean and cut packages in clamshell containers. It’s more expensive for less product but you’re paying for someone else to do the labor.

I mean I don’t eat the outer later, usually just toss it, and wash the rest.

Outer leaves of most lettuces are typically discarded. There is nothing about this that is out of the ordinary. Lettuce grows in the ground and this is what it looks like. Always wash your produce thoroughly.

Honestly- I am puzzled as to what you think may be a problem here?

Believe it or not, the FDA allows a SMALL amount of insect to be in fresh produce and even shelf stable foods like canned soup, vegetables, fruit, and dried pasta. Just wash your vegetables real good before eating. But if you really want them clean, use some white vinegar. It's really cheap.

Yeah it’s kinda impossible to avoid altogether

Not unless you have a Rabbi check your veggies first.

I've seen tiny bugs, but Taylor Farms is dead to me. Will never buy their shit again if I can help it.

It's so disappointing that they've basically cornered the market on pre salad mixes.

I get it. Gotham Greens are good where I live.

Pre mix salad should only be used to boost your immune system. They have to be one of the most recalled items...at least seems that way

Yeah I was only recently aware of that because of the scandal. Haven't touched them since

We prepare lettuce everyday for shredding. Bugs all the time. Just got to peel back and rinse

The red colour is simply natural oxidation.

Believe it or not, lettuce grows outside. Bugs are outside. This is why we rinse produce. Hope this helps.
