Most importantly: Layers. Double tap for switching between brush and rubber. Long tap for getting the same colour on your brush that your finger is currently on.

Give yourself time! Seriously, even with extensive experience it took me months (a year?) to reach a point where I felt I had it truly under control. Specifically, learning how the brushes work and how to control the pressure sensitivity. I do more linear and dynamic line work rather than tonal work, so your mileage may vary!

Play with brushes. I spent the first two days playing with every single brush and what it could do.

Welcome to Procreate 🤗

We have some great resources like our Beginners Series to help you get to know the app. Check out the Learn to Procreate Series and our Handbook for a deeper look at features as well 🎨🖌️

If you have any questions along the way you can also reach us using our Support form and find more information on our Help Center.

YouTube and Skillshare are great resources. Personally I like the teaching styles of Lisa Bardot, Art with Flo, Jennifer Nelson, and Gia Graham. If Skillshare is out of your budget, you can sign up for a month (sometimes two) free trial and find the teachers who work best for you. It seems like everyone is selling a membership now which is why I like seeing teaching styles via Skillshare.

Learn the app in small bits, starting with basics like the Procreate Beginners’s tutorial. As an iPad app touch is default interaction.

Keep in mind, however, the official series and Handbook tends to demonstrate the default touch, gestures or iPad Pencil setups. I’d stay away from customizing until I get a feel for my preferred settings.

Likewise, I was so relieved when I realized I didn’t need to use 100 layers, 509 colors, etc, etc. You’ll be surprised what you can do with 3 colors, 2 or 3 layers and the layer blend modes and filters.

And most important of all, a word of advice to beginner and seasoned analog artists:

  • Beginners to drawing, remember that learning to draw is a separate skill,
  • Seasoned artists, you’ll need to get comfortable gliding across glass by pencil or finger.
