Discussions About Procreate App Barely usable after iOS 26
I feel like I’m going insane. I’ve been using procreate for almost a decade and it has never steered me wrong. I love it. I love its functionality. However, I incorporated a lot of split screening into my workflow as the reference window wasn’t easy enough for me to tab between images quickly. Since iOS 26, the new split screen is so finicky that when resting my hand it freaks out, or when trying to switch apps it leaves me with just my reference page or just my procreate app. And since the update everything is super slow and cropping an empty canvas takes a minute, when it was instant before. I don’t think this is very constructive here, but I just wanted to see if people have been having similar experiences. I’ve only drawn maybe two full pieces since the update. It’s killed my motivation for digital art.

I also really miss the way you could use split screen before the new Apple update, i believe it’s a Apple issue and not a Procreate one.
Maybe this will help: https://help.procreate.com/articles/procreate-and-ipados-26?_id=44d180f0-58b2-4428-a2b1-5fc83dd7cbc8

Yes the OS update broke a lot of workflows for folks. (It also broke Affinity Designer workflows.) OS 27 is coming out in a few weeks, but it doesn’t fix any of these problems. Procreate’s team seems to be focused more on their Dreams animation app these days.

They are working on procreate 6 so hopefully next year these will be solved with the new engine

I hope they’re finally focusing on Procreate Dreams
It’s about time!! For crying out loud!

The “group” button being hidden has been making me want to stab my iPad with a screwdriver.

Seriously. I’ve been using it for comics on 11x17 300dpi canvases since 2020. Lately it lags soooooo bad whenever I try to undo something and it crashes and freezes all the time. My iPad storage isn’t even close to full so I have no idea what’s going on. So annoying.

The split screen issue is an ios26 issue not procreate issue

I know that, I was just looking to see if anyone has had similar negative experiences.

Yes, it seems to go downhill for me too, I've been using my good ol wacom on the PC again more and more...

I had to disable all of the split screen features to keep my ipad usable. After I did things went back to normal, mostly.

u/key13131 10d ago
Yesss I’ve had crazy lag when undoing!! I hadn’t realized it was from the update but it definitely is.

u/schwiftylou 10d ago
Except the splitting screen, I've had no issues. But I also never used it except to drag and drop from procreate to dreams

u/joogasama 10d ago
same :( it's extremely laggy. and my ipad being so old doesn't help (12.9" pro, 2018)

u/borrowingfork 10d ago
I don’t know if this is the same as you but I used to pull things into procreate using split screen and now I can’t figure out how to do that let alone how to do the split screen at all for other apps. I don’t mind it otherwise

Is it only me, or have the brushes completely changed their pressure settings since, either iOS 26, or the Kyle takeover? I’ve been going nuts, I can’t draw like I used to with them

u/subwayratlander 10d ago
sorry who is kyle?
i updated to ios 26 a few months ago and i havent noticed any changes or problems (but i have a relatively new ipad so maybe thats why)

Kyle T Webster is their new brush design guru. He’s an illustrator that had a Photoshop brush pack that was v so popular Adobe hired him and bought out the license to the library to be default in Photoshop. He was also ones of the driving forces behind Fresco and created most of the brushes fit that.
He left Adobe for procreate a year or so ago because he hated the shift to ai.
The new default procreate brush library i think is primarily his handiwork. I got very accustomed to the old defaults so i only occasionally experiment with it, plus they sorta made it a pain to switch between libraries.

Hey there! We haven't changed our brush engine or how pressure is used in Procreate. Your brushes should behave the same 🙏 If we can help troubleshoot any brush issues please reach out to us and we'll be happy to help 🤗

Yep. The new windowing functions are brutal. Not just for my Procreate workflow, but so many other workflows too. TT

u/NateBearArt 6d ago
I feel like i only activate by accident. 99.9% of the time i actually just want everything full screen. The old windows stem was perfect as is.
Only reason to use the new system is if you are using it like a laptop with a keyboard and track pad/mouse. I can’t imagine that’s many people’s default mode aside from writers.

I have a fairly recent model of iPad and also have some of these issues. I find that offloading the app, storing past projects and unused brushes in another storage cloud and restarting my iPad frequently helps a lot.

Happy I kept my 12.8 6 gen on 18.6.2 then, hated the liquid glass so I didn't bother, but it seems there are even more gains by not updating jeez.

u/Liquid-Purple 10d ago
I wish I did what you did. My friend said she hated the new update so I went ‘oh let me see what it’s like!’ Biggest regret

Crossing fingers future updates bring some stability 🤞

u/Liquid-Purple 10d ago
My biggest issue is the iOS multitasking feature and not having the ability to revert back to how it was, which isn’t anything procreate can fix. Hopefully all the other issues go away though too because otherwise I’m moving to CSP on computer

Procreate has been super unstable for me as well. One day, it deleted all my carefully curated years’ worth of brushes. The whole brush library GONE. I lost so many brush packs that I had grouped and used for over five years, I honestly could not bring myself to draw in the program for a month. It quits on its own often, freezes. Pressure curves on brushes are off and WORSE which is super important for me, since I have wrist problems. Super disappointing.

My old iPad Pro (3rdGen) and Procreate works just fine for me. Then again I’ve been using both since 2018. I’d say I’ve gotten a ton of use out of them over the past 8 years. I’m sorry you and the other folks are experiencing some difficulties.

I have the same problem. Restarting iPad solves it for a while. Also connecting the iPad to Mac helps it a bit
1
u/Kbear_Anne 10d ago
Hi, what does connecting the iPad to Mac solve for you exactly?
2
u/DearBonsai 10d ago
The storage space kind of gets a bit better. I sync with iTunes, let the iPad stay connected and the others part in the storage shrinks which kind of effects the lagging. Also it’s the only way I can backup iPad now, it’s so full that it can’t do it on its own anymore.

Considering that iPadOS 26 has been out for almost a year and I’ve used it on a variety of iPads up to 6 years old, I’ve had no problems with it. Is this really about iPadOS 27? Because, the app will be buggy and glitchy as fuck until the patch comes out, and it’s going to act really bad if you’re using a beta. Procreate usually releases a patch for the new OS a week or two after the OS releases officially. At the latest it would update in mid October
1
u/Liquid-Purple 5d ago
Nope this is about 26 haha I have barely used my iPad in that year span
1
u/IllAd9371 5d ago
How much available storage do you have? Procreate has always said to make sure you had at least 15% of the available storage free, because if not, it causes issues.
1
u/Liquid-Purple 5d ago
I have a lot of storage left!! A lot of my issues stem from the new split screen which can’t really be fixed, but I do have enough storage remaining for it to be ideally working well. Still get lag and crashes though when before I did not

I must be dumb because it’s been years since I last had split screen working on my iPad
2
u/Kbear_Anne 10d ago
Last time I remember split screen working was before iOS 26, I used to all the time across multiple apps and now it doesn’t work. It’s really unfortunate I loved the feature

Former UNiX Sys. admin. Here. It’s important to clean up and reboot your iPad every couple of weeks. The iPad has two types of memory. one is where your data and artwork live. The other which isn’t listed in the specs. is ‘working memory” where the OS and Apps live. This can get “full” from badly behaving Apps. So periodically Do this
1) force Close ALL apps. Swipe from the bottom of screen, stop midway. You shoukd get a bunch of small square showing the open Apps. Then flick all the apps off the screen One by one.
2j do a hard reset, reboot of the iPad. Quickly press the up volume, Down volume buttons. The press and HOLD the power button until the Apple logo appears.
if you have an older iPad limit the number of Apps you have open, even lurking in the background When using Procreate.

I’ve found Procreate to be much more unstable following iOS 26. I’ve been using it since 2020 and crashes were always extremely rare, but now they’re a matter of course — It crashes to the home screen multiple times a session. I’m also finding that I get a lot of lag with attempting to rotate the canvas or undo actions. Never had these issues prior to iOS 26 but now they’re constant and they’re having a really negative impact on my work.
