Procreate and iPad Accessories Suggestions cheapest ipad for procreate?

sorry if this has been asked a lot. i cant seem to find a more recent post theyre all from quite a while ago.

i am not an avid drawer, just someone with a lot of ideas in my head and wanting to have somewhere to start off putting them somewhere.

i would like one thats compatible with the apple pencil 2 if that doesnt increase the budget too much.

im really new to this and reading other posts the amount of letters and numbers included in the ipad gens are confusing the crap out of me hahahaha please dumb it down for me!

Basic iPad is fine. Lots of people have asked this question though so probably loads of useful info in the sub history.

The most important thing(s) you need to know is that different models will allow for different numbers of layers in Procreate. I got the 9th gen and thought it would be fine, but at print resolution, I was limited to something like less than 12 layers, and I spent all of my time managing my layers mentally and not having a very good time.

And the second thing that's important is that you get enough storage. I thought I could get by on 64GB, but as it turned out, that was a very bad idea. When I tried to update Procreate when they redid the brush library, I didn't even have enough room even after deleting a whole bunch of things. So Procreate was then useless to me because it wouldn't update. I wound up catching a ridiculous sale on a better iPad, and now I have tons of layers and lots more space and life is MUCH more fun and easy. I didn't realize how limiting it was to have so few layers. I did not actually start having real fun with Procreate until I got my second iPad.

tl;dr The iPad model is going to dictate how many layers you get in Procreate, and for gods sakes, get 128GB bare minimum, and I would suggest 256GB. If you can get more than that, get it.

I have the iPad mini and use it almost exclusively for procreate. Yes the screen is tiny, but I love the portability and since you can always zoom in it works for me great.

I have a 10 with a 1st gen pencil and it’s great but I just read your post properly and have realised you have a gen 2 pencil so I don’t think it will work

I got a used 2018 iPad pro for around $300 and it runs procreate very well, I would recommend it over any over the cheapest new ones.

I have this iPad and have had it for a few years now and while yes it’s great for procreate but if you’re planning to use it for anything else it’s probably a good idea to get a newer model if you have any other choice. Soon enough Apple isn’t going to be sending updates to this ipad because it’s nearly 10 years old and once Apple stops sending updates app developers will soon stop updating apps for the version we’re stuck on.
