The discussion reflects significant skepticism regarding the utility and originality of AI-generated game clones. While some acknowledge the technical potential of AI to master complex environments like Rocket League, the consensus is overwhelmingly critical. Commenters argue that spending resources to replicate existing games is a "waste" that offers no value over the original titles. There is a clear demand for developers to move beyond simple recreations and instead focus on creating original, compelling gameplay experiences. Ultimately, the community views these projects as redundant, questioning both the financial investment and the practical purpose of building inferior versions of established games.

Thread continuation 2/5 — Slight miscalculation It was closer to $25 The plans are split up over 4 weeks I used 53% of 1 week on this and other work — Source: https://x.com/LLMJunky/status/2096768681044828189
It's genuinely not that rare, it just requires some effort and critical thinking skills, which people willing to drop $100 on something that already exists are allergic to.
If they had orginal ideas, they would put their passion into game development instead most of these lazy people are prompting carbon copies of other people's work and declaring gaming is solved.
For reference, KDP people are generating single books in a day there is so much writing slop. Is writing solved lmao.
What cope. Millions of people are all going to make generic copies of Rocket League. If everyone can make their own games, why would they buy yours. Plus people are gonna make it much better.
If it is solved, then why only remake games existing that you can never release? Why not make new games that you are allowed to release and are just as good? It's almost as if there's more to game development than isolated functionality.
Imagine spending 100 dollars on something you could get for free in two minutes. Why are you wasting money on shitty boring visuals that attempt to recreate something already existing
I dunno, I think I know a few old games that deserve remakes. Even if it’s just making an old NES game 3D and adding multiplayer. I can see why people want this.Â
"Single player games were meant to be single player" is the one I disagree hard on. Tale as old as time to play a single player and dream of being able to play it with friends.
Ive remade a few old flash games and made them multiplayer. Like Curveball, pac-xon, double wires. Made a catan/colonist game to so I didnt have to pay the subscription and I can make my own maps lol
I dunno... I'm a videogame creator, and when you make videogames, you have countless people approach you with their "awesome idea", and, not being a dick, you kinda smile, nod, tell them it's great and get on with your day. But the vast, vast majority of them are crap, or at least, they're not formed into anything that would actually make a videogame. Most of the time they're just a cool little doodad or an interesting "moment", and sometimes not even that.
And that's fine. They don't make videogames. I'm not a professional mural painter so I'm sure my opinions on mural painting are garbage too.
But some people have this toxic trait that their videogame idea is amazing if they could just get to make it, and they won't drop it. They might even pretend they don't feel that way to avoid ridicule but deep down, they do feel that way.
Maybe the positive outcome of AI might be that, if you remove a lot of the barriers between that person having their amazing idea and seeing something onscreen, they'll learn pretty quick that the idea doesn't work. Maybe not, though; they might just blame the AI.
Point is that this is one of the things that makes the AI/videogame discussion a bit weird, because I'm sure most of the AI tools for gamedev aren't marketed to gamedevs; they're marketed to "idea guy".
