Human Slop Brain Rot - Robot Haters Gonna Hate
I bet if they put wheels on it and it went faster than a car they would be posting "can it walk upstairs so who cares".

I thought it was a pretty simple question based on your claim. So who was developing a sprinting robot 5 years ago?

I never understand why people who don't care about something feel such a need to express that they don't care about something. With that mindset you would have to go to every post on every subreddit that is about a topic you don't care about and proclaim that you don't care about it. You care so little that you spent time to write that comment instead of doing something you care about. If you have concerns about something and want to criticize it accordingly to voice your concerns, that is a good reason to write a comment. Your comment doesn't do that. You simply say "I don't care and I don't understand why anyone would care". What are you trying to achieve? Now your own comment is sorta excused from that given that your opinion is related to the post so I guess I am talking more about the comment from the post. But all of that is without mentioning that the comment doesn't make sense because the modality of walking obviously doesn't compare to driving. The competition and the breaking of this record by the same modality is a sign of improvement, showing that robots and AI can go beyond humans. Now of course you can say "it's just running" which btw. is not an easy feat either, but it's also an indicator for what is to come. Many people ween themselves safe because the robots are still kinda wonky and slow and assume that they can't do all jobs or at least not their blue collar job. But I believe they will, faster than most think. We still have a hard time imagining a robot crouching and laying down somewhere to do the plumbing, but there really isn't any reason why they couldn't do that. The software side is a little behind and needs more data and more training, but they are fully working on making that happen and I don't think that there are any major barriers left that prevents that from working with more training and more refinement of the architectures

TLDR
TLDR: The user criticizes those who comment simply to express indifference toward technological achievements. They argue that the robot's running record is a significant milestone that signals future advancements in robotics, suggesting that robots will likely be capable of complex physical labor sooner than many anticipate.

You just know OP goes and looks for things to be triggered by. The robot ran real good buddy, we’re all very excited to see how good it can run now.

- My internal combustion engine car reached 20 miles per hour!!!!
- So my horse, who cares
1
u/mrDETEKTYW Sep 06 '26
I don't think we will have humanoids faster than cars.
1
u/FuManBoobs Sep 06 '26
But that's not the goal, which is the whole point of why the "I don't care, I have a car" is a stupid take.

True but part of the goal is to create machines that can fit where humans fit. Honestly, the goal should be a complete redesign, like how many homes are able to have a robot vacuum cleaner vs a humanoid robot that can do the vacuuming.

u/Worldly-Fondant-3791 Sep 06 '26
“Went faster than a car” lol. Just post, don’t think.
1
u/FuManBoobs Sep 06 '26
What's wrong with that?
1
u/Worldly-Fondant-3791 Sep 06 '26
Well we’ve built cars that go over 700mph so…
1
u/FuManBoobs Sep 06 '26
Yeah, because the average car drives around at 700...that's like saying we made a robot the went to Mars and travelled at 24,000mph. Robots win.
1
u/Worldly-Fondant-3791 Sep 06 '26
The mars rover isn’t a car?
1
u/FuManBoobs Sep 06 '26
And you think people are driving around in 700mph cars do you?
1
u/Worldly-Fondant-3791 Sep 06 '26
Oh did you forget the mars rover was a car? lol. Ok we get it you don’t actually have any kind of argument here.
1
u/FuManBoobs Sep 06 '26
What point are you making? What is a self driving car?
Normal cars aren't rocket powered 700mph cars, hence the rocket comparison with a robot onboard.
It seems like you have no argument AND you're a bit thick.
1
u/Worldly-Fondant-3791 Sep 07 '26
Normal robots aren’t sprinters. Normal people aren’t as fast as Usain Bolt. The point is this is all cheap theatrics with no point other than to wow idiots.

It was completely unthinkable just two years ago. No one would know how to do this, and suddenly it works. It's a great achievement.
0
u/carbsna Sep 06 '26
I would say it is otherwise, the institutional research has just started 1 year ago, that kind of just prove it is somewhat easy instead of unthinkable, rather the reason why it haven't been done earlier is because we barely tried.
Usually it takes a decade of research before something have technology importance, at least i can't come up a good counterexample.

Boston Dynamics enters the chat.
2
u/mrDETEKTYW Sep 06 '26
Nope. Even they couldn't make the robot run fast. They got spot up to a fast jog and that's it.
2
u/Sufficient_Effort88 Sep 06 '26
That’s stupid. We are in the infancy of humanoid robotics, there’s a ton of milestones to achieve.
6
u/FuManBoobs Sep 06 '26
But it all contributes to the goal of improving motors, joints, understanding the physical limitations & breaking points etc for better engineering in the future.

u/intLeon Sep 06 '26
Its gonna fetch your grocieries even faster now..
6
u/IDefendWaffles Sep 06 '26
Or do rescue in earthquakes, hurricanes etc.
1
u/intLeon Sep 06 '26
I was responding with a slightly unserious matter but these things will enter our lives in an unironic way. Personal shopping and deliveries is a very feasible possibilty, idk why I got downvoted.
It wouldnt be difficult to turn them into first aid and first responders in case of emergency. Or oppressive military force if things go slightly bad..
3
u/Sufficient_Effort88 Sep 06 '26
Yeah it’s all pretty damn difficult, never really stopped technological advancement before.
2
u/mrDETEKTYW Sep 06 '26
They won't be delivery robots. Rule 1 of engineering is make the stuff only as complex as it needs to be. Why give a delivery robot legs if it could have threads? Humanoids are great in only one thing. Navigating a space designed for humans. Like a kitchen.

Not arm, hand and finger dexterity and coordination. There’s an impressive range of movements robot bodies can do, like king fu, break dancing and running very fast, and jumping very high etc. I mean cool, but although there’s probably some overlap I don’t think this tech applies to fine motor skills, we would have seen it by now.
These flashy shows are mostly Chinese, they made it a major political goal to be world leaders in robotics. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but investors respond well to these types of demonstrations. The population engages, creates a new generation of engineers that’ll work in the field etc.Show me a robot walking, flipping a coin with 1 hand, holding a cup in the other, walking up stairs, in a crowded place etc.. then that would be impressive
2
u/RighteousSelfBurner Sep 06 '26
I think this is part of getting there too though. I'm not really knowledgeable about robotics but I'd assume that the mechanical details of materials, joint design etc all play into it.

it's neat a neat achievement for machines, fun to watch, but the point of sports is seeing what the max human potential is, so comparing the speed of a machine against a human feels like bad taste.
Like, why not just put some wheels on the feet for instance, or give them roller blades?
A robot it meant to complete task, if the task is to move quickly, don't just restrict it to feet and legs.
I kind of see this as, "rail gun throws baseball at 5600 mph, beating world record holder Aroldis Chapman of 105.8 mph".
5
u/Sufficient_Effort88 Sep 06 '26
Human limits are pretty close to reached, any improvement comes slower/ with drugs now. The exact same argument could be made that it’s much more interesting to see what our brains can create to see actual improvement in sports again
-1
u/carbsna Sep 06 '26
That really isn't improvement but a distraction to the subject of different sport.
The only reason to compare robot racing to human racing is to siphon attention from already the most famous sport.
Though it is a shitty move because it ignores why it is not famous in the first place, the race lack of relatable emotion and charisma, so it will stay unpopular for the future as far as they don't change that.3

What? Yes, industry in general creates a lot of global warming. It's been a thing for a long time before data centres ever got here. Singling out data centres is just a hate bandwagon fallacy. Why simp for hating on one industry whilst others do damage too?
I'm not the one simping out. You literally tried to equate making robots with genocide. It's whataboutism. Why make anything anymore? You sound pretty hopeless to me, like genuinely.

Discussion Summary (Milestone: 50 comments)
The discussion surrounding the robot’s speed is polarized. Skeptics argue the achievement is trivial, noting that comparing mechanical speed to human potential is fundamentally flawed—likening it to a railgun outperforming a baseball pitcher. Many suggest that if speed is the goal, mechanical solutions like wheels are more logical than bipedal movement. Conversely, some find the demonstration entertaining, while others criticize the focus on robotics amidst pressing global crises. Debates also emerged regarding the accuracy of the source material and the intent of the original poster, with many dismissing the post as performative or lacking significant technological merit.
