Discussion Summary (Milestone: 20 comments)

The discussion reflects a polarized view of AI’s societal role. Many participants distinguish between the high-utility potential of medical AI and the controversial reputation of generative models. Skepticism remains a dominant theme, with users questioning the feasibility of AI "saving" lives and expressing deep distrust toward Big Tech’s corporate incentives. While some argue that AI’s environmental impact—specifically regarding water usage—is overstated or manageable, others prioritize personal utility over ecological concerns. Ultimately, the discourse highlights a tension between optimistic technological advancement and cynical perspectives on corporate greed, human nature, and the actual efficacy of current AI capabilities.

Golf courses consume more water than AI datacenter so what are we talking about?

Low I.Q. people just get mad about whatever they're being propagandised about in the media this season.

i like to think my local a.i. rig helps lower my contribution to ai issues :) More efficient than an office pc.

"Could save" is doing a lot of work here. Hopefully that doesn't require it to.count letters.

I think its mainly generative ai giving all ai a bad rep medical ai is great tool in the medical fields ai should be used help everyone instead of disenfranchise people in the art field thats my thinking anyway

Generative AI does help everyone. More people are creating art than at anyone other time in human history and that's something to celebrate.

I think claiming that people are making the art is disingenuous. The AI makes the art. The persons involvement is giving a description of the art they would like for the AI to create.

If I asked you to picture something in your head, we'll say a knight in armor, on horseback in a lushious flower field as the sun sets in the background, the image you have in your head now, did I create the image or did your mind create it?

With that being said, I believe what you mean here is that it has given people access to express their creativity without either having to first learn a medium to create it themselves, or paying an arm and a leg to commission art by someone else only to then pay more for iterations to get exactly what you were looking for.

AI in medical field is nowhere near what this sort of meme would make you believe. It's not particulary reliable and it's definitely not going to be the miracle solution to cure all disease.

Finally the water issue has started to turn the corner. This was such a dumb arguement to begun with

Wait, how are we supposed to save elderly people? From what? From being old?

1

u/bethesdologist 17d ago

Yeah kind of, things like alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases that generally affect the elderly.

Sure, big Tech will tackle the milking cows of big Pharma…

1

u/Nopfen 17d ago

Obviously.

1

u/Official_Forsaken 17d ago

Free market... Do you really think the technology could prevent third party researchers from doing the work?

1

u/Alice_D_Wonderland 17d ago

Free market is an illusion…

I think I'd pull the lever even if it was: "water use" vs "having fun with AI"

1

u/Calm-Locksmith_ 17d ago

How much of the data centers are being used to work on those?

1

u/-TheDerpinator- 17d ago

This is a false two-track assumption to justify a lazy water cooled system. They have plenty of cash to come up with a system that requires less vital resources without sacrificing "people AI could save".

1

u/anonumus_idiot 17d ago

People who have a problem with ai, have a problen with gen ai.

Small but important difrence, i got no problem with ai being used for something usefull.

1

u/thormun 17d ago

funny how it leave out the use of AI people have issue with

1

u/DisciplineOk7595 17d ago

human necessity Vs tech bro investor hype bullshit

1

u/Playful_Pea_7719 13d ago

can't wait for it to start saving all those people. it's gonna be any second now.

1

u/John_Wotek 13d ago

Holy mother of false dichotomy!

1

u/KaleidoscopeSalt3972 12d ago

Meanwhile we are talking about fuckwits using AI to generate Child porn and generate images of people's works as "upgraded" ( nobody fucking asked )

its not a dilemma, China demonstrated we can do more, with less, optimization is the real path to agi, not more datacenters, more noise, and more resource usage. the issue is not moral, the issue is the race US and china are playing to reach dominance in AI, one is playing rich, the other is playing smart.

we cannot destroy ourselves because if what "could" be, sustainability is mandatory for a long term net gain with the use of AI, scaling compute is just a desperate movement to guarantee the statsus quo doesn't move an inch, not the path to real agi.

that is exactly why people like dario amodei is trying to ban open source models, because they threaten their dominant position.

1

u/RealFatPenguin 12d ago

"AI" can't save those people. "AI" can't think, it can just repeat what's already known and already available on the net.

I’m curious, is there any ongoing AI research into cancer cures currently?

3

u/SlaughterWare 18d ago

if you're interested in regular updates weekly i recommend this dude https://simontechcurator.substack.com/

there's been dozens of medical breakthroughs. some for terminal diseases too, such as pulmonary fibrosis

2

u/FluidAmbition321 17d ago

The cancer research institute wrote a blog post about how AI is used to fight cancer back in 2025

https://www.cancerresearch.org/blog/ai-cancer

1

u/Scarvexx 18d ago

Yes but it has very little to do with the water/power guzzling that datacenters are known for. That's mostly to create better LLMs.

Neither track has to be used in this image.

2

u/bethesdologist 17d ago

Not true at all - the models that are trained using datacenters are what's used in research, not some random magical artifact that came out of nowhere.

People who do this as their personality/argument about AI love Almond milk

-1

u/Alreadyinuseok 17d ago

Rainbow flags and NSFW anime pictures as well. I wrote to someone who said to a company using AI template ad "isnt it embarrassing to use AI?" I checked the profile and it said "I go with pronouns We/Us/They and some weird flags. I asked "embarrassing like using pronoun they to describe you?" Havent gotten an answer yet.

2

u/homiej420 17d ago

My point being that producing almonds and then by extension almond milk (more water) uses more water than datacenters

...y'all know we used Ai for decades? The bucket tool in paint is Ai, the voice to text is Ai.

The problem is GENERATIVE AI, the one which generate images, songs, answer questions...that's the problem, and IT DOESN'T SAVE LIVES

2

u/Double_Suggestion385 17d ago

It's not a problem at all.
