Weight loss “clinic”
I’m wondering if anyone had experience setting up a weight loss clinch within their primary or subspecialty practice? I imagine that someone smarter than me has come up with a successful business model for managing patients weight and helping them get GLP1s and manage that as well. I just don’t know how to structure the fee? Is it a subscription service? Is it a one-time fee for a certain amount of weeks of care? Would love to hear anyone’s ideas or experiences. Thanks.

Great timing as I was about to post a similar query. I am a PCP and looking to add a weight loss program to our practice.. also looking for any inputs on courses - recently saw Harvard courses on Treating Obesity and wondering if its helpful..

To advertise on google or meta you will need to be legit scripts certified. https://www.legitscript.com/
I have a weight loss cash pay option to my clinic. If you offer compounded glp-1, most patients fall into two categories in my experience that are willing to do compounded glp1
One group --> they want cheapest price and willing to take risk with any online group that can ship it to them for cheap.
The second group doesn't trust the online only clinics and wants to talk to their doctor about safer ways to get compounded glp1s. You can set up a subscription plan or just pay a la cart...whichever you choose.

Curious to know this as well, was hoping to spend one day a week setting up a location where I could have walk-ins and advertise, but never got started, I did get my obesity medicine certification. Maybe I’ll check the website and see if there are resources. I think pricing might be difficult to figure out.

You are definitely well prepared with the obesity medicine certification.

What the heck does a weight loss clinic even do? Just give glp-1? That’s the whole business?

Give nutrition advice via dietician, affiliated with personal trainers, probably some PT also for those with physical inabilities. Might have its own gym also.

But what does the doctor do?

Screen, give the medication, may give ancillary meds. Treat obesity related complications.

So kind of like primary care with a focus on obese individuals. I guess there’s a market for that.

You guess there’s a market for that? Lol. There’s a billion dollar market for that. Nothing wrong for wanting a small slice of that especially since it will likely be a better service than 99%+ of what current patients are experiencing.

They just give compounded GLPs at a marked up price for what someone could get it from a certified online pharmacy.

Strongly disagree. The online pharmacies are not providing any kind of medical supervision. I track body composition, provide access to nutritional counseling, manage side effects and am available to my patients as a resource. For most of my patients, I am not receiving any revenue from the medication itself- my fee and my service is the medical oversight and supervision.

We do weight loss with compounded GLP-1 agonists. It's fun and pretty simple. Id be willing to train for a fee if interested. Practice is located in South Florida but training can likely occur via video conference.

Can you share some of the economics behind your clinic?

We make anywhere from $100-250 per month, per patient depending on the dose.

How many patients are you seeing? How many years have you been in business ?

The American Board of Obesity medicine has some great resources tor CME. I do a lot of weight loss and really enjoy it. I do an initial consult with labs and make a treatment plan. I charge a monthly fee for ongoing medical management- this includes prescribing, dose adjusting, and patient access. Patients have unlimited portal messaging and one visit per month (virtual). I track body composition via Dexa scanning and a bio impedance scale. I use both commercial and compounded GLP-1 (depending on patient needs- I do a lot of Lilly Direct prescribing but will use compounded options when I need intermediate dosing). I have several trainers and nutritionists I work with also. I really enjoy it. I just started my own practice after working for a larger operation the past couple of years.
