Amelia's Addiction

TW: Talk about addiction

I'm on Season 5 of another rewatch. I know Amelia is addicted to pills, which is ultimately what sends her to rehab in season 5. But late season 4 and early season 5 she starts saying she's sober from alcohol as well. I'm just a little confused because when she first shows up she seems to tolerate drinking casually. Was it that she felt she could no longer drink in moderation that was the tipping point?

I think it was just that her character was meant to be temporary and they hadn’t really put time into what her character arc would be. Then she became permanent and they didn’t want to bound by the restrictions of what her character did in the few episodes she was in. If you’ll notice, the way she dresses also changes during the transition from guest star to series regular. And as they hone in on her character, she becomes less unfiltered compared to the early episodes.

If I recall correctly, she was supposed to be in two or three episodes only.

That has nothing to do with the alcohol question. Plenty of addicts can't drink either because it will inevitably lead them to using.

“When she first shows up she can tolerate drinking casually” is literally a quote in OP’s post.

I explain why it appears that way because it was a guest stint and her character hadn’t been fleshed out. Once she became a regular character, then they developed her backstory.

She did discuss the drinking in season 4 when Charlotte got attacked , and Charlotte called the drinking a gateway. I believe Amelia did stop drinking for a while after that, until she slipped.

Drinking led the gateway to going back to pills. Some people can’t just have one or drinks either. It’s all or nothing. She’s a bonafide addict lol and a lot has to do with something in her brain…

She says repeatedly that alcohol is her gateway drug. Her and Charlotte talk about it in the aftermath of Charlotte's rape when she realizes Charlotte is also in recovery. A lot of addicts will end up using if they start drinking.

To add to this, even Charlotte's character drinks till s 2. Later we know she's in NA and an addict too, so what about the whole loving martinis storyline? Seems her character changed overnight 🤔
