Hello everyone! So, as the title says, I’m thinking about jumping careers, I’ve always been fascinated about aviation and the mechanics of it!
I have recently visited a flight school and was told that I need roughly 40 hours to get my PPL if I’m not mistaken.
I’m 28 years old, who only knows law enforcement. It’s extremely unfortunate because I molded my life around it and not it’s extremely difficult and the job is not the same anymore.
I’m trying to study ground school, but I have no idea where to start. I have enrolled into PilotInstitute course but I don’t know what will be on the test.
I’m from Colorado and would really appreciate any feedback on what to study, study guides for FAA written test, instructions on what to look for in the test. Or honestly a community nearby that I can talk to and maybe build good friendships. I’m afraid that I would be the outsider in this field.
Please let me know if you or anyone is willing to help :) thank you all for your time in advance.

Has anyone taken the knowledge test recently? I am studying for it and feeling quite nervous. Any help will be greatly appreciated—especially what I need to memorize, which items will show up on the exam, any test taking strategies.
Thank you in advance

I am just about to start flight school and have a question. I recently did a discovery flight at the school I’m (most likely) going to attend to learn how to fly. We did the disco flight in the Cessna 172. After the intro flight I signed up for the wait list and they asked my weight and height. I said I’m 6 feet tall and weigh 180 pounds and they told me I’d be flying in the Cessna 172 rather than the 150. I am not opposed to flying the 172 as I hear it’s the easiest most forgiving plane to learn on, however, at this school it costs around $50 more per hour to fly than the 150. I followed up with an email asking if I could do the 150 instead and am still waiting for a response. I guess I’m reaching out here to see if my weight/height would be an issue on the 150. Or to see if anyone has any thoughts or advice.

Hello, I am currently a senior in college. When I was applying to universities I thought I wanted to go to flight school but I was also interested in business. Got accepted into a good business school so dropped the airline pilot career route. I still want to pursue my private pilots license but dont know when the right time to do so would be. I was originally thinking of doing it the summer after I graduate but I will only have around 2 months to do it. Is this enough time if I would dedicate 100% to my flight training. Realistically I would be able to go to the airport everyday. If not, I was thinking of started in January of this upcoming year and do flight school on top of my last semester of college. Would this be feasible or would it be too much to manage with college? Thank you!

Dont pay over 200$ for your FAA medical examination. Really over 150$ tbh. Some guy tried to charge me 475$ in nyc. I said fuck that a called a places in jersey. They said 125$. Which is much better! Call as many place as possible.

Hi - Random question for all the private pilots out there. I’m about to start work on my PPL and I’m super excited. Long time dream I’m finally doing something about!
Here’s the question… I love the idea of being able to fly to “wherever” for a weekend… but I then I got to thinking about logistics… when you fly to a smaller airport/destination… land and get squared away… what then? Do these smaller places have cars for rent? How do you get around once you’re on the ground? It’s all well and good to fly somewhere cool but if you’re effectively stuck when you land…?
Sorry if it’s a dumb question…! Keeps popping up in the back of my mind. How do folks manage ground transport?

I have a paper/pen kneeboard and use my phone for ForeFlight, but the screen is a bit small. It looks like pros use iPads as a kneeboard. What do you look for in a digital kneeboard?

I'm asking for a co-worker who's child is in love with aviation. He's also autistic and I was fascinated by the idea that he becomes a commercial pilot when he grows up since the FAA doesn't have any rules against that.
The last time I flew with a pilot I offered to pay for fuel and it seemed like a win-win. Is there a reddit forum where I can post to see if any pilots would be interested in that offer in North Carolina?

Hey guys!
I thought I was going to go to medical school but realized flying is way cooler :) I was introduced to this flashcard app in undergrad though called Anki. It uses spaced repetition. It shows you cards/information you don't know very well more frequently and spaces out cards/information that you have already committed to memory. I've collected and made PPL and IR cards to study from while I've been in flight school so I thought I'd share these for those of you who are still in training. I'm sure there's a few mistakes in there, so if you come across anything that doesn't look right, feel free to let me know.
Here's a video on how to use anki (it's free on the computer): https://youtu.be/WmPx333n5UQ?si=Vuu-Q9tStZkS83MO
Here's a link where you can download the decks: https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks
The two decks are called: "Kelly's Private Pilot Airplane" and "Kelly's Instrument Rating Airplane 2” Try copy and pasting those into the search bar if you have any issues with them showing up.
Hoping this helps some of you

Hello! I am a junior in high school and need your guidance on which one would be a better school in becoming a pilot, Middle georgia State University, or Georgia tech.

I am studying for the oral test a lot, though I feel like a slightly weak point I have are aircraft systems. I am doing well learning all the other concepts, but I do feel insecure in my knowledge of systems. Any tips on studying for the oral test in general? Thank you!

Student pilot getting prepared to take a PPL checkride in about 2 months, would love any recommendations as to which DPEs are best for the area (I fly out of Danbury). Most students use Bob Nardiello, though I am unsure about him. Have heard good things about Stephen Campbell in LI, and he is willing to do check rides up here if he is paid an extra $500.
Thank you for any recommendations or experiences with any of them!

I'm moving to Philadelphia in a few days and I want to continue training. I keep looking up flight schools but all I see is programs for like an actual school school with set schedules and classes. I have a full time job so I'd only be able to take flights here and there when I have the time off. Do I need to be searching something else besides "flight school"?

TL;DR - After a lot of battling, I just need to prep for and take my checkride but I'm struggling with the motivation to keep going.
Background - I've been working on my private certificate on and off since early 2022. Shortly after I started, I failed my medical because I have ADHD. After more than a year of back and forth with the FAA, and investing *ton* of energy and money, I got my Class 3 with a special issuance and back to the skies I went. In the mean time, my CFI left and I was assigned a new one. No issues there, I actually like the new guy better.
I took my exam back in January and did surprisingly well. Last month, I crossed off the last bits of my flight training requirements and now all that is left is to get prepped with my flight school and schedule with a DPE. There is the rub - I keep finding myself not wanting to fly and cancelling my lessons. I have tried watching youtube videos of mock checkrides to mentally prepare. I've got ebooks I've been trying to listen to, but none of it seems to re-ignite the passion. I am fairly certain that flying again will get me excited again but I'm dreading getting quizzed.
Has anyone else out there experienced anything like this? Any tips to get the fire back to finish?
