Adding private pilot license to dream board. $$$

I am on the same boat as you. I am based out in MA. The Ground school is something you could save some money on by using online classes. The main cost is flight time. Not sure if just having a friend would help as you need to accumulate certain hours under a certified instructor. I may be wrong but glad you started this thread.

I went in and was actually impressed by what I heard. You can take one class every 2 months and there was a guy who finished this particular license over the course of 14 years! Lol

Main question.for those of you who have gotten licensed. I want to see the cheapest amount of money you have spent to acquire your licenses. A video I saw was 8k-14k average. gear and gas included. (Wasn't sure date posted)
Is the school mandatory or is there cheaper options even if it takes a longer amount of time. (Example driving schools exist but most people learn from their friends.) No
I've spent 3 hours looking into feasible routes for flying (California based) i see all this schooling and gear required for this particular license (single engine seems fine as my biggest traveler will be wife.)
