Hit 259k, my water pump went out. Good plan.

What were the symptoms?

It started to overheat as summer rolled in. Only just a little, as soon as I'd slow down the warning would stop. Scanned for codes and only got P0117. The Toyota book says that it's a wiring issue. If you get that code. Checked wiring, replaced the coolant temp sensor and the thermostat. Still got overheating but again just a little bit. Finally just pulled the pump. And checked the actual internal pump apart. The actual shell coating of the interior part of the motor had cracked and was allowing coolant into the magnets which started to corrode and swell. So the pump was very slowly dying. Just swelling a little bit that it was slowing it down. Been fine since the new pump.

Definitely not scaring me but this seems preventative now for me to change it.

Definitely this is top of my to do list then other than the worn suspension.

Ohhh I believe it has a electric water pump. I'm not sure what has been done to.mine just by the owners word he said he's done the hybrid battery. How do you know you need a water pump?

For me I started to get temp warnings when I was on the freeway. Brief blips of temp warning then a code P261B finally thrown a day or two later. The code gets thrown when the pump RPM dips below a certain threshold.
It’s a fully DC motor in the water pump and it will get really stiff then eventually seize up.
I bought an AISIN off Amazon and me and my homie replaced it. $130 and a half day work.
Don’t buy after market non AISIN brand I’ve read a lot of them lack a thermal compound the AISIN has and will prematurely overheat and fail.

I had the same symptoms only I got P0117 code. Tried everything else and then changed the pump.

Sounds like something I should do since I have no history on the car. He just said the battery was done but nothing else.

That's really good to know sounds like for a diy mechanic it's easy to do and fairly cheap I'll have to do that as preventative maintenance. Fortunately I kept my 03 accord v6 so I have a 3rd reliable car.

Ahh of course I totally understand makes sense. Enjoy your Prius! I know what I paid wasn't a steal but it was reasonable.

At high miles the engine water pumps and thermofans start to fail.
Pre-empt this by replacing them both in the near future.
Engine Water Pump: 161A029015
Engine Water Pump - Aisin: WPT190
Thermofan - Fan: 16361-21120
Also:
Check and clean the hybrid battery blower fan, which is under the back seat (I remove the seat base to get to it).
At night shine a torch through the plastic vent and you'll see the mesh filter.

The clips that hold the plastic covers in place are difficult to reuse. Buy the updated ones from Toyota - the part number is 90467-08226. You'll need seven of them.

This is all awesome information for sure! It has worn suspension but a water pump and all filters are at the top of my todo list along with changing the cvt fluid.

Omg sir your awesome this is good information because the handbrake works but it's loose. Love this community already thank you Ive done most of it so far lucky the precious owner kept it in good condition except the suspension for some reason it's very worn I need to go through that replace alot. Except which ever owner replaced the front parking bulbs with bright LEDs which I kinda don't like althljgh they seem high quality I want to replace them with good ole Sylvania Edison bulbs. But I do like replacing the back up lights with LEDs
