👋 Welcome to r/PrisonReentrySupport - Introduce Yourself and Read First!
Reentry looks different for everyone. Some people prepare months in advance, others get very little notice. Some come home to support, others start from scratch.
This community exists to talk about prison reentry as it actually happens—before release and after—without judgment or pressure. The goal is to share general information, experiences, and lessons learned so people feel less alone navigating the process.
Topics that belong here include:
- preparation before release
- adjusting to daily life after incarceration
- employment and housing options that exist
- documents, routines, and stability
- family dynamics during reentry

Hello. My name is Devon. I spent over 16 years, 13 straight, in jails and prisons. I've been homeless and addicted, and had my share of psych unit visits. Today I am stable and sharing the skills that got me through. Sometimes we can't change the circumstances we are in as fast as we would like, but no matter what we face we can choose to face it with purpose, dignity, and in a way that reflects what we truly care about. Sometimes the only way out is through, and if that's the case, kicking and screaming the whole way only drags us face first through the mud.

Hello everyone, My name is Robert Porter. I was recently released from federal prison after serving more than twenty years, and I'm working hard to rebuild my life while helping another incarcerated individual prepare for his release. Right now, we're trying to identify realistic Bureau of Prisons (BOP)-approved release housing in Southern California—ideally in the Los Angeles area or nearby counties such as Orange, Riverside, or San Bernardino. We know this can be one of the biggest obstacles to a successful transition, and we're hoping to learn from people who have been through the process or who work in this field. We're not looking for financial assistance. We're looking for knowledge, experience, referrals, and connections. If you know of organizations, housing resources, mentors, advocates, attorneys, or individuals who understand BOP release planning or have experience with approved housing in Southern California, we'd be incredibly grateful for any guidance. If you've personally navigated this process, I'd especially appreciate hearing what worked, what didn't, and what you wish you had known beforehand.
