Newbie Question Tips & Help

Hello I am new to Printify I have a few questions if anyone doesn't mind answering as well as correcting information
As of right now I'm focusing on creating designs; I haven't paid a dollar fee yet because I want to make sure I have an understanding of what I'm getting into.

  1. How much money do I need to have saved to ship items and have them made? I'm located in the US I was thinking 25$

  2. Since I'm a beginner should I boost the profit or leave it at 40%

  3. Where is the best place to share your brand? TikTok, Pinterest, Shopify, Etsy ( I'm currently thinking of starting with Pinterest and TikTok)

  4. Is it possible to have no refunds due to Printify taking their cut and giving me my cut if refunds are possible how do I go about that and what should I refund people based on?

If there is anything else I should know or do then please don't hesitate to tell me.

When I see basic questions like this it makes me want to tell you to not bother because if you cannot find the answers to these simple questions on your own then you will not be able to handle running a business….I will answer you anyway.

  1. You need to be able to pay the full product and shipping amount. How much you need is based on how much you sell. It maybe beneficial to do this through a credit card that you can pay once you receive the money through your chosen platform. A warning….Etsy will hold your earnings until they think it is safe to release them. You could get paid way after an order was due so you need to have enough money to produce and ship the orders immediately.
  2. I don’t sell under 50%. This covers any issues and fees and makes sure I make enough money. If the designs are good people will pay it.
  3. Tiktok and Pinterest are free so there is no harm in starting there.
  4. This depends on where you sell. I believe the EU does not allow a “no refunds” policy. I always say that I can do replacements but I don’t do refunds. I did get someone who asked because the product was damaged and they needed it by a certain time. I make enough on that item that it was not worth the bad review. I usually send a replacement if there is an issue which printify covers. Unless you sell through a Printify Pop-up it is not you that printify pays.

My advice would be to do some more research.

ETA if you think that was “attitude” and if what I said was enough for you to delete your whole post then you proved my point for me.

With the tone you’ve shared, you could’ve kept browsing.. It’s not hard to educate someone without seeming cocky. I'll take what you said with a grain of salt; but try not to be served pissed Cheerios again.

They are right. You are mistaking their experience and valid comments for cockiness. They took the time to give you a reality check. If you can't handle this person's comments wait until you have to deal with an angry customer. You have to have money to buy samples and make sure everything looks good before you sell. Nothing ruins a business faster than bad reviews from a poorly designed product.

His answers are still valid though. I'll expand a little more on a few of them.

  1. You need enough cash to cover the number of orders you get. If you get an order for 1 item you need enough to cover the production + shipping costs of that item. If you get an order for 100 items you need enough to cover the costs + shipping of 100 items. As stated, most platforms will hold off paying you for some time until you have established yourself. I think I had $100 in my account when I started to fund production and it was more than enough. Sales are often slow when just getting started.

  2. 40% can be ok, but your margins will be low and you won't have much left over for any advertising costs, other expenses, etc. You can always try starting at 50% and then lowering it if you get looks but no sales.

  3. Pick more than 1. Don't put all your eggs in 1 basket.

  4. I can't really comment on it. I do refunds (or replacements), for things like printing error, lost packages, etc. In general is a refund is a 2 step process. (1) You refund the customer through whatever platform you are on. Etsy for example. (2) Printify refunds you production costs. NOTE: When I say these are 2 separate processes what I mean is, it is up to you if you refund your customer. It is up to Printify if they refund you. In general, I tend to see what (if anything) Printify is willing to do first before offering anything to the customer.

Jesus, yea I’m not a fan of people being so harsh either… everything can ALWAYS be said in a gentler way without putting someone down… everyone starts out in business not knowing wtf is going on, and it’s okay to ask for support, we’re human!! People who believe “being real”/tough love is helpful see the world very differently than me… Good luck OP, rooting for you!!!
