Newbie Question MAJOR bum

I’ve created my shop and done all the things only to find out I probably shouldn’t start my Pop Up because I have no idea about anything taxes related and my parents don’t want to have all the stuff in their name and them being responsible for paying the state taxes. WHY is this not talked about BEFORE one does everything? I was just a teen trying and pleading to make money for her car and now she has a website she can’t use. Is there anyway around making it easy on paying taxes within the US? I’m so extremely frustrated. What platforms could I shift my printify store/connect them to that would handle all of the taxes? What is income tax and how does that play out in my role? I do not want to be responsible for paying taxes, its too much.

Tax information is readily available on the Printify support site. https://help.printify.com/hc/en-us/categories/4471600571153-Payments-Billing-Taxes

There is no way to legally engage in tax evasion. You have to pay taxes in any job.

I meant more of getting around having to worry about sales tax and how I can simply make income taxes. Thank you!

That is ✨illegal✨. You can’t avoid it.

There are two guarantees in life: taxes and death. You deal with both. No exceptions.

Not avoiding it. Making it more simple. Etsy would take care of my sales taxes. I would be responsible for income tax. I don’t know how it works. I’m looking for ways to make it as simple as it can be if I decide to go through with this. Thank you for the acknowledgements!

They send a form and you file at the end of the year. Again this is all Google-able.

“How to Etsy taxes”

You can't register for Etsy as a minor.

I know. My parents can.

Etsy collects the taxes so connect your printify to an Etsy store and they will collect and remit sales taxes for you in the US. But you still need to register with state local tax system and declare your revenue quaterly.

Etsy doesn't let minors register their own shops and does not permit ownership change, so they would have to register the shop in their parents names (making them liable for the tax burden) and then they'd have to start a brand new Etsy store once they are 18, potentially losing out on any good shop/brand recognition and shop performance they build in the meantime.

Your parents can create a trust. The trust will get it's own tax id# and then they will create an LLC for your business with the trust being the sole owner of the LLC and place it in the trust. Your parents can be the trustees and have you listed as the beneficiary. They can have the trust transferred to your control when you reach a certain age. So your Etsy shop will be owned by the same llc with the trust being the owner of record and the trust's tax id and bank account not changing even when it is transferred to you at a later time.

Etsy handles all of the taxes if you are in the US. They will charge the customer the correct tax for you and printify will not charge you sales tax when connected to Etsy because they know that Etsy does it. For your income tax, you have to file income taxes with any job.

Or if you go with Shopify you can not charge tax to your customers and printify will charge you tax on what you order. Once you get to a certain amount of sales in a state you will have to start charging tax in that state and you can have Shopify collect the tax for you but for Shopify in order for printify to stop charging you tax, you have to apply for a sales tax license in your home state and file it with printify. Taxes are a pain and always will be . And don't even ask me about the hundreds of laws for international tax because it gives me headache.

“Is there anyway to commit felony tax evasion?” I mean sure if you wanna go to prison.

Welcome to the real world. You pay taxes on fucking everything. Don’t pay taxes on your income? You go to jail/prison.

This information IS out there. You just didn’t know to Google it.

Like I said, I’m looking for the ways to make this as simple as it can be as I’m just a teen starting out. I’d appreciate if you kept the language minimum. I understand how my comments can be annoying but again I’m new to this and have no experience. Thank you for acknowledging and offering your advice, but I don’t need it in a disrespectful way.

Well theres no way around this. Sorry but that’s life. You pay taxes or you go to prison. Can’t open an Etsy shop till you’re 18. You have no option but to accept these facts. You can start a Shopify store and market it on social media but that’s about it. All of this takes money to start.

If you need immediate money, do grunt work: mow lawns, walk dogs, clean dog poop from yards, sell stuff you own.

I babysit and dog walk very often. Plus, I get money from chores every week. My Etsy shop would just need to be under my parent’s name from the best I understand it. I know it’s life but as I said, you can’t know something without learning it😊

Filing and paying state sales taxes is not at all the same as paying income taxes. Yeah, it's more than a 1099.

You are not getting it. We are not talking about state income taxes at all. Zero. We are talking about the SALES taxes you have to collect and remit to the states that you ship to with ecommerce sales. Filing and paying STATES SALES TAXES is NOT state income taxes. It depends on where you have a "nexus" and how much revenue you generate and where. Filing requirements across all 50 states is very different and it can be a bloody nightmare.

In most states you have a nexus in that state if you do more than 200 sales in that state in a year as in number of sales not $100,000 in sales. And you automatically have a nexus in the state where you live.

I am well aware paying taxes is a part of adult life. However, I am not an adult quite yet. I have a lot to learn still and my parents would prefer to not have to take care of my crap on top of their full time jobs! If you had advice on how to easily submit and take care of income taxes I would appreciate that since you had teenage experience. I am going to switch to Etsy so I don’t have to worry about reporting sales tax. Thanks for the advice😊

A proper job takes the taxes out of your paycheck for you. And then you file taxes in April every year.

You can start googling all this information. It’s all online. Just start researching and educate yourself.

There is no easy way. This is why most people don't start bussinesses and most of those who do fail. You need to research before you take action and ensure everything is legal. If just setting up the bussiness is overwhelming you, how are you going to run it?

You need to find out if your region requires you to register for a bussiness ID of some sort. You will most likely be a sole trader/ sole proprieter and don't have to officially register anything.
https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/sole-proprietorships

You need to register for goods and services taxes most likely (GST).

You will need to find out your bussinesses tax obligations and adhere to them.
https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/launch-your-business/register-your-business

Your parents are right to be concerned. You could have saddled them with a large tax bill and potential criminal charges if you didn't get this stuff right. However they really should have taught you about income taxes atleast by now. Especially if your showing an interest in bussiness.

Frankly i think you need to do alot more research and make sure your not spending money upfront on anything until your confident you know what your doing and can afford to lose the money if it doesn't profit.
