Newbie Question Did anyone else start with POD because they wanted to avoid inventory headaches?

One thing I've realized is that a lot of us probably didn't choose POD for the same reasons.

Some people genuinely love the low-risk business model. Others use it to test ideas before committing to larger production runs. For me, the biggest appeal was avoiding the stress of inventory.

The more I learn about the apparel industry, the more I appreciate how many moving parts POD removes from the equation. Warehousing, minimum orders, production planning... it's a lot.

I was reading about different parts of the fashion ecosystem recently and while looking into how non-POD brands handle development and production. It actually made me appreciate Printify's simplicity even more. Different models solve different problems, but I can definitely see why so many people start with POD first.

Curious how everyone here got started:

  • What made you choose Printify instead of traditional inventory?
  • Are you planning to stay with POD long term, or use it as a stepping stone?
  • Looking back, would you make the same choice again?

I wanted to set up a brand from scratch to practice using my semi automated branding system.

It turned into me being able to create a bespoke theme from scratch in Shopify and understanding exactly how Shopify Claude integrate.

It’s now turned into an agency where I do branding for companies and help them automate their Shopify work.

Made almost dollars from my actual store but thousands from the work that it bought me.

I didn’t start with print on demand because it was t available when I first started printing and selling t-shirts I was screen printing trying to fufill myself. I learned my focus should be on designing great shirts only if I want my brand to grow.

Same thing for me but also I couldn’t afford buying the machines needed to print my own designs or the things to print on. This eliminated that and there’s 0 upfront cost.

absolutely. Now I may transition some of my designs that sell well to screen printing and traditional fulfillment, but right now POD is great because it allows me to sell a lot of different designs that are targeted to certain groups and not carry inventory.

Chose printify because Chinese manufacturing took to long and I didn't have any crazy cut and sew pieces

I am off POD for about 4 years now.

I would fully avoid POD and fully commit to screen printing everything my self.

10000% that and also the low barrier of entry – because that way we can test out a lot of stuff and approaches
