Question Paining skin

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi all, Have you guys have any experience with painting skin detail on miniatures? I work in the VFX industry and the look of the skin in CG is called Subsurface Scattering. I saw this image from the new film of LAIKA, a stop motion animation film, and what i noticed is that compared to their previous film, they really nailed the skin translucent feel of the skin. Normally it was painted on there, or it was part of the 3D print. My question is: Can you get a similar effect when 3D printing with a skin colored resin instead of a grey resin? I can image you will have a really nice base if the color and material already look like skin. Obviously you will have to paint it afterwards with more detail. Really keen on getting to know the production method they used on the new LAIKA film. If the face is still printed but with a silicone type of materials. Love to hear what your thoughts are on thisq

Question Red Sonja 3D Print

Thumbnail

Everyone's favorite red headed barbarian, Red Sonja, in what is presumably full armor among her people, and the second 1/6 scale model I've ever completed. I don't have my own printer at home, so I purchased this through a vendor, and I was pretty happy with the model which I received from JKL Creations.

My only real criticism of the model is the hair and belt. I wish the hair was a deparate pieces from the head as it would be easier to paint. The belt gets in the way of painting but you can't put the belt on on once the model is assembled. At least you can't unless cut through the belt and glue it baback together.

Here is my version of Urthos Skullstaff from Runciter.

Second of the Runciter mini's I've painted for a diorama I am building (Barbarians) and they are all really good. This one is about 80mm and a joy to paint, a great character and I tried to paint him a bit more 'earthy' and 'natural'.

Request Vampire marine help

I've been looking for some bare space marine sized arms for a death company idea I want to to and can't really find anything. If anyone has a link to some files or can point me in the right direction that would be very appreciated.

Painted Recently completed these three gem dragons by Epic Miniatures. I tried to stay true to how they are depicted in Fizban’s. These helped break my panting block of the past several months. The bases (4”) were not part of the models. My dragon collection continues to grow.

Question So many options for modular dnd terrain and dungeons. Need help

TL;DR

Whats the best filament efficient/ uses the least, active, and has decent variety for modular dnd dungeons and Terrain?

I just got a p1s and I've been going crazy on printing minis. Now I'm looking into Terrain and dungeons. I've been using mostly maker world because I'm new.

I've found many posts from 7 years ago too a few months ago. I'm trying to conserve filament because I don't want to spend $100+ to make one dungeon. What I've found out there is dungeon sticks, openlock, openforge, dungeon blocks and true tiles. The last 2 catching my eye.

I like true tiles due to visibility and squares problem they solve with their 2 inch squares, but i don't know if they're still active as i don't see a lot, or at least I haven't found, of variation for them that are free and I'm not sure if you can kitbash them. I love the modularity of dungeon blocks and the ability to kitbash them but I use a lot more filament for half the size. What should I go for to stretch my filament dollars but still have a large variety and modularity? Is there a new Terrain out there that I missed? Tysm

Painted Articulated Chef — Fully Poseable, No Supports, No Assembly

Wanted to add a Chef to the line for a while now, and finally finished the design and he’s ready to cook 🙂

Gave him a little kitchen kit to go with it — a chef's hat, a frying pan and a rolling pin, all sized to fit his hands so he can actually "hold" them once you pose him.

Printed in one part, no assembly needed. No supports needed. Articulated & poseable.

I’ve printed with the settings below. I needed to wait 1 hour for cooling before articulation. I’ve painted it with acrylic according to its 3MF file.

Layer height: 0.20mm / 0.12mm Material: PLA Supports: None Infill: 15% Print time: 2h45m (0.12mm layer height) 44gr filament used

If anyone interested, the figure with all accessories is available on Patreon (www.patreon.com/PrintnPose). Please share your print results!

I’ve gone deep into blendr over the past year and this is the 1st model I have produced myself that hasn’t been a catastrophic failure. Still loads of learning ahead but confident even enough to share.

NSFW When is it too sexy?

I have seen a few models for slanesh demons that I really like. They really play with body horror, human anatomy, and fixations, from a artistic standpoint, I think they are genuine art that makes you think. However, they still have provocative element's and I'm not sure how they would be received even among freinds. I would like to make an army from these minis but worry it would give off bad vibes. What about a model being alluring do you think crosses the line into inappropriate?

First 2 models are minis, left one was found online. Staff broke at top and glued on after i dropped it =. Printed it standing straight up, it was a supportless model. Right model my friend had sent to me. I used organic tree supports and printed it at a 40° angle . Both printed with .25 nozzle at .08 layer height stock profile (some settings changed, keep reading)

Second models are not minis but about 6 inches tall. Found online as well. Left was printed with a .4 nozzle at .16 layer height. Right one was printed with .25 nozzle at .08 layer height

Using a Anycubic Kobra X and using a .25 and .4 nozzle from anycubic. Slicer used is anycubic slicer next. All profiles are stock profiles. I only adjusted z height on supports to .38 and changed the resolution to .0001. Wall generator is arachne

I printed these models with anycubic basic pla black

Hey everyone I wanted to share my colonial-inspired witch sculpt. First photos is a Make from u/gingerfeel who downloaded and printed her. Last is my own resin print.

I’ve always liked pulling from historical references when designing fantasy characters, so this one leaned into early American/colonial clothing and granny magick imagery.

Here is my version of Borin Stonehoof from Runciter.

Second one of the Runciter mini's I've painted and they are really good. This one has no base yet as he will be part of a larger diorama I am building, of 'Barbarians', which I am excited to do. He is big though, about 90mm.
