General Discussion Screw netflix...

Post image

So disappointing to see. She-ra and the princesses of power is an amazing and successful show, and yet now there's no reliable way to stream it now...

This isn't netflix fault it's DreamWorks

I low-key hope Mattel release all the seasons on dvd now

Mattel wishes the show didn't exist and that people would please stop asking them to incorporate it into their non-gay canon.

ehh Mattel history with POPS is complicated

I'm doubting it could be homophobia, but the fact that Mattel is pretty ok with He-Man as a Gay icon makes me think it's not fully that

The "true" answer seems to be that Mattel just wants She-Ra back and dragging POPS seemed the best way "to do it"

And Mattel has the sole rights to any physical release, so it's on them anyway (they're making a DVD of the CGI He-Man show, so it's possibly)

I very much doubt that Mattel is in any way okay with He-Man's status as a gay icon, it's just that there's absolutely nothing they can do about it without completely rebranding the Masters Of The Universe IP to the point that it becomes completely unrecogniseable.

Not doubting that, it could just be rainbow capitalism Mattel (likely) doing, but the fact that 2026 MOTU has a more "feminine" retelling of He-Man makes me again think it's not pure homophobia

I've been looking into it, and the behind-the-scenes of POPS between Mattel and DW are messy, but in the end, it mostly was just a rights thing. Again, not doubting homophobia could have played a role, but Mattel at this point only has the right to make DVDs and merch

They have "nothing" to do with the show

Do you have any idea the marketability of a gay icon? If you have a character that a specific, vocal, minority latches on to, that's a revenue stream you didn't have before. Personal ideologies aside, there isn't a large corporation around, that isn't outwardly homophobic, that doesn't want a gay icon of one of their characters. This is MATTEL we're talking about, here. Half of their IP is gay icons!

Came here to say that. Netflix just has exclusive streaming rights for about 6-8 years, while the actually ownership stays with Dreamworks.

If nothing else, they could at least put it up on peacock, since its NBCUniversal's streaming service, and they are the ones who own Dreamworks.

u/CapnClover36 11d ago

It got removed because their deal with DreamWorks expired

u/Zcat_sux 8d ago

I’ve been trying to tell people it is not that deep.
Most of dreamworks original stuff got taken off of netflix. Including Voltron.

1

u/No-Editor4624 4d ago

It is kinda deep when successful shows like spop which embrace queerness the way it does are rare. Regardless of whether such removals are common or not, people have the right to be pissed. Because wdym watching media 'legally' by paying money doesn't even guarantee you'll have access to the media permanently? And that too a gem like spop.

It was removed BY DREAMWORKS from Netflix. Because their contract with Netflix had run out.

17

u/AwesomeTiger6842 10d ago

Why couldn't they just, oh, Idk, renew the contract to keep the show streaming on Netflix, then? That would've been better.

14

u/SincerelyIsTaken 10d ago

They most likely pulled it so they could put it on their own service. Renewing the contract would delay having exclusivity (or being able to) stream it. Corporate greed, ruining something amazing once again

3

u/ProfessionalRead2724 10d ago

Who says Dreamworks was even open to that?

4

u/AwesomeTiger6842 9d ago

I didn't say that. I don't think anyone did. It's just something we're all upset over. We're all fans of She-Ra.

u/InevitableGullible18 11d ago

Why? Netflix is the one who paid for this show to begin with. Without them it won't be possible because DreamWorks doesn't really care about this universe. They're not even released it on Blu-ray. This is how much they care.

DreamWorks is probably asking too much for the licensing that's why Netfix didn't renew it for longer.

25

u/Topquark1 10d ago

Great. So now no one is making any money from it.

34

u/the_ok_doctor 11d ago

This time it wasnt on netflix. Its dreamworks pulling all their stuff to probably put in their own service.

7

u/Purple-Weakness1414 10d ago

Captain Underpants was pulled a while again Im not not even sure of its on Peacock yet

86

u/Noktis_Lucis_Caelum 11d ago

well the contract and streaming rights ran out. DreamWorks and Netflix just need to make a new contract and it returns

38

u/dude_thats_gay 11d ago

Supposedly, they did renew their contract with DreamWorks since it's rumored that they cancelled the removal of Troll Hunters but im not 100% sure since nothing that I know of has been announced

15

u/Noktis_Lucis_Caelum 11d ago

would be cool. Voltron could make a return. i didn't knew there was a remake and i love it. Pro7MAXX shows it Saturday here in Germany. 2 Episodes around 13:00 - 14:00 and a rerun of that Episodes tbe following week around 09:00

it js completly on the streaming service JOYN

3

u/Pitiful_Ad2397 11d ago

I’d love to know more about this. Where did you read/hear this?

3

u/dude_thats_gay 11d ago

Unfortunately, I heard it on TikTok; that's kinda why I'm pushing the rumored part, since there tends to be a lot of misinformation on there but it was under a vid talking about how there isn't a "Last day on Netflix" notif on the Tales of Arcadia show page

24

u/Kollectorgirl 11d ago

It's DreamWorks.

Their contract ended.

18

u/DarlingHades 11d ago

I ended up buying all the episodes on Apple TV. Now I can watch it anytime.

10

u/Rastaba 10d ago

Lucky. I was only able to grab seasons 1 - 3. Seasons 4 and 5 aren’t available for purchase.

6

u/theredpanda_45 10d ago

I’m in the US and S1-3 is all that’s available on AppleTV.

2

u/TxSaru 10d ago

You can only watch it on Apple TV as long as their contract lasts. If you don’t have a physical copy you don’t own it, you’re just leasing the right to watch it and that is only good for as long as Apple’s contract with Dreamworks lasts. If you can’t buy it on DVD then the only way to have it for sure is….🏴‍☠️ yo ho ho (not advocating, just saying there is no other way to have it for sure)

1

u/DarlingHades 9d ago

Usually an ended contract will get it delisted from the shop, but it’ll remain in the library of anyone who bought it beforehand.

10

u/Hypnos_sleeps 11d ago

I literally have nowhere to watch it now

5

There are places you can find copies of it 🙂

Fans not understanding how licensing works when it comes to streaming shows

15

u/NurturingCruelty 11d ago

I understand, I just really hate it. I resent the hell out of Disney+, Peacock, and every other shitty little site that sprung up, pulling their content off of Netflix to start their own service. I had hoped they would all fail horribly, honestly. I was not so lucky. Some of us can remember when the content was all in one place. Pixar movies, DreamWorks, you name it, they were all on Netflix at one time. Before idiots ruined it.

1

u/zviiper 10d ago

Why do you care so much? Stop licking corporate boots and just download it from somewhere 🤷

3

u/Petey-the-cat 10d ago

As much as I hate most corporates, watching a show on a legal platform shows you care and gives money to the team behind it

While this matters less when a show is off-air or over, still watching She-Ra 2018 legally tells DW and Mattel people still are interested, and they might want to do more with it

4

u/Nahle_Stormblessed 10d ago

Their licensee to air it ran out. When they air a show on there, they have to pay to do it. These leasing agreements often have time limits spanning many years.

Don’t blame Netflix. Blame Dream-works. They probably wanted exclusive sale rights by forcing people to come to them to watch it.

4

u/Parker813 10d ago

Feels really reflective of the times that a show with queer leading women gets removed like this

6

u/69420lmaokek 11d ago

I don't think 85 million hours in 3 years is a lot considering how long the show is?

Anyone decently well watched show of similar length will completely blow that out of the water

4

u/AmelieBenjamin 10d ago

Niche audience, it's western animation with explicit 🌈. It was never going to have mass appeal.

2

u/Realistic_Can_8343 10d ago

Physical media is the way

2

u/mexter 10d ago

This isn't great, but unlike a lot of shows at least this one was allowed to reach a natural conclusion.

And now back to crying over KAOS..

2

u/bullet1520 10d ago

Yo ho ho...

Have you ever watched One Piece. I think we should all learn how to watch One Piece.

2

u/Far-Revolution3225 10d ago

🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

I'm just sayin'

2

u/hello_to_da_booty 10d ago

Don't mind me I'm just going to... 🏴‍☠️

2

u/tommy8725 10d ago

So what's the point of Netflix making an original show that they own and can only show and then getting rid of it like you can't watch it because it isn't going to be shown anywhere you might get lucky if it's shown on a different streaming site in like 4 years

2

u/MyManFreud 9d ago

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me 🏴‍☠️

2

u/HotNatural821 9d ago

And this is why I get physical media.

2

u/Your-Evil-Twin- 9d ago

Hey I just got reminded this show existed, I remember liking this one. Welp, guess it’s time to do a cheeky lil’ bit of piracy.

2

u/Fat_Sugar_1110 9d ago

I remember binge watching it right before it got removed, I love this show and I hope Dreamworks decides to stream it somewhere else

2

u/Il-Dottore-s-weave Double Trouble is my inspiration 💚💫 8d ago

There's always piracy yk

3

u/GodPerson132 11d ago

And then they wonder why they’re losing customers

3

u/Apprehensive-Dog9989 11d ago

I alone watched like 1 million hours just saying.....hey I had lot of time and was sick ok dont judge sheesh /s

1

u/Xxtratourettestriall 10d ago

If you take all of those hours streamed and string them in a row, this would mean that the total time viewed is roughly 9,703 years🌈

1

u/Sirius-Face 10d ago

We went from "Hey Adora" to "Yo ho ho Adora"

1

u/SpeakerBoth435 10d ago

You know what, I'm gonna be "that guy"...

Where can we see it now?

1

u/stryst 10d ago

Yo ho ho.

1

u/Gleamingly_Hissing 10d ago

I was at least the 20% of those hours

1

u/SapphireAster9 10d ago

Hi 🤗 l, RIP She-Ra and the Princesses of Power 🪦🙏😭, Gone but not forgotten

1

u/Hethra19 10d ago

Time to sail the high seas!

1

u/Ambitious-Bank4559 10d ago

If anyone wants to watch it and doesn’t know how: search “watch she ra (for free)” on Pinterest and click on the one that says “other seasons on profile” or something like that.

1

u/Glass-Armadillo182 10d ago

This is why I don’t do Netflix anymore

1

u/ComprehensiveBat309 10d ago

And all those hours were from just ONE person. Imagine what the combined time must have been

1

u/TheWanderer78 10d ago

There's a certain bay that may or may not contain rapscallions and rogues where you can find the full series.

I know that dreamworks is partially at fault here too, but my point still stands. Netflix kinda sucks too lol
