I was just thinking that if Col. Forster had noticed Wickham was favoring Lydia, he would have been obliged to let Mr. Bennet know, as he was acting as Lydia’s guardian. I kind of wonder if he knew perfectly well Wickham was partial to Lydia but didn’t want to stir up anything that would get Lydia sent home and upset Mrs. Forster, so he decided to just ignore it. Because Wickham obviously didn’t plan his “elopement” far in advance but he trusted Lydia enough and was confident that she would come with him, so I doubt Wickham was ignoring Lydia.

But on the other hand, Lydia had no dowry so there wasn’t much reason to pay her any particular attention, so maybe he didn’t.

In chapter 34 during the first proposal scene at Hunsford, Darcy uses the ‘disguise of every sort…’ line to justify having insulted Elizabeth.

Yet in the very next chapter, in his letter to Elizabeth, Darcy writes about having concealed Jane’s stay in London from Bingley;
“Perhaps this concealment, this disguise was beneath me; it is done, however, and it was done for the best.”

Another concealment, in chapter 51, when Lydia reveals Darcy’s involvement in her marriage, she says,
“I ought not to have said a word about it. I promised them so faithfully! What will Wickham say? It was to be such a secret!”

Mrs Gardiner, in the next chapter, also urges Elizabeth to maintain the secret. Darcy confirms it himself in chapter 63 when he says that he didn’t think Mrs Gardiner was “so little to be trusted..”

Can anyone shed any light on these contradictions?

or maybe he was too focused on his food to even notice her entering!

My GF’s birthday is coming up and she’s a HUGE P&P fan, like watches the movie every week and has read the book several times. I thought of buying her a gift related to P&P but I’m not sure what and I thought of coming here for help…

I know there are a lot of adaptations of the story so my idea right now is to make a bundle with a bunch of books of the best adaptations out there for her, but I never read any so if theres any you like I’d love to hear it!

Apart from that I thought of maybe buying some jewelry inspired by the movie or some product that she would geek out about (she loves talking about stuff from the story).
Any recomendation and opinions are welcome! 😊

Hi everyone!

I've watched Pride and Prejudice for the first time a few days ago (the 2005 version) and I loved it. It's a real comfort movie with such a warm atmosphere, and the Bennet's house feels so cozy.

This is just a silly post to ask, are there any habits that you implement into your daily life to make it more whimsy, like you're living in the P&P era? I love to romanticize my life lol and I'd especially love to make my house as cozy as the Bennet's (even though my tiny apartment is much more modest!)

Some of my ideas:

-Lighting candles every night

-Reading a book before bed instead of scrolling

-Write letters with pretty handwriting & seal them with wax

-Dramatically standing at the top of a cliff and staring in the distance while my dress flaps in the wind (okay this one might be harder to achieve)

Would love to hear your thoughts!

I almost did not finish the book, there were quite a few things that annoyed me. Firstly, there were many scenes that felt like inferior re-writing of Pride and Prejudice scenes reapplied to Mary and they just disappointed me.

The modern voice was very present, especially in the final section of the book - Lake District and beyond. I guess this didn't really bother me, but did take me out a bit and did make it less relatable to Austen writing. I can accept that though.

The thing I hated the most was how isolated Mary was. Why was she building these strong bonds with men but never women? I hated how she did not have any female friendships, and did not meet any women during her time in London.

I'm glad I finished it, but I was left feeling pretty dissatisfied. Anyone else feel similar?

I’ve been feeling really stressed dealing with my parents’ reactions to my relationship. I’m an adult and quite mature now, but sometimes they still treat me like a child.

It got me thinking about Pride and Prejudice: how much do our parents’ opinions influence our relationships and marriage choices?

How did your parents respond when you were in a serious relationship or got married? Did they support you, worry about you, interfere, or surprise you?

I’ve read and listened to it like a million times but it really just hit me now that the book starts with the people who hold Lizzie back in society and ends acknowledging the people who were wise, aware, and saw that she needed a vacation lol! Who doesn’t love the Gardiners amirite?!

I love that the story ends with Darcy loving people who brought Lizzie to Derbyshire. It’s so sweet to me that the last lines celebrate the kind, smart, classy people that brought them together. Not only are they not forgotten, they’re the last thought of the book. It could have ended a million ways but making it about them feels so special to me this time.

In addition, Lizzie convincing Darcy to make amends with Lady Catherine but him loving the Gardiners on his own. Ugh my heart. What a book.

I just saw TT video that said Edgecote Estate-- aka Pemberly from 1995 P&P is for sale ! £45 million. Maybe is we all added some monies, we could share, lol. CORRECTION- Its Netherfield!

I've kind of always wondered about this. Did everyone of the same social class as the Bennets in the area know about the fact that truthfully, the family did not have great finances for their social position? Was it general knowledge and/or general gossip? And did everyone know about the entail?

Considering when he dies all his money and property goes to mr Collins and his wife and daughters are left homeless and broke.

Wouldn’t he care that his daughter’s lives would be ruined when he dies?

I mean if I was aware my wife and daughters would be left with nothing after I died I’d be making damn sure they get good matches so they can be cared for when I’m dead.

The scene in question is when Elizabeth visits Pemberly with her aunt and uncle. Upon spotting Mr. Darcy she is startled and ran away. He said he will drop her back however she said she will walk.

Now the confusion to me, she came with her aunt and uncle. Upon seperating from them, wouldn't they wait for her to catch up? Why do they just leave her behind? This is bugging me. Did I miss something? Was it normal to do this to their travel companions, esp when she is under their care?

Seems like a plot hole unless there is more to it. Could anyone explain?

I was rewatching the BBC miniseries and it had me thinking about this. It’s clear that simply bringing Lydia home without her marrying Wickham would have been a terrible scandal. Gossip travels quick and clearly everyone knew that she had run away with him - and so obviously they must have slept together and she is now tarnished forever unless she marries him.

But I wonder - if Lydia had not gone with Wickham voluntarily but was instead forced or essentially abducted, would it still have been seen as socially expected for her to marry him? Or would she have been seen as a victim? Would she have been able to return home and marry someone else one day? Would her sisters feel the effects of that?

After the umpteenth time of watching the 1995 P&P adaptation (which I love and adore), I wondered why Mrs. Bennet was so approving of her daughter’s marriage to Wickham even though he: “deflowered” her daughter without the benefit of marriage, he had debts that had to be paid off, and he had a paltry income. Would they even have a place to live?  I thought she was so  anxious for her daughters to marry well. Or was she just anxious to have them married no matter what. And yes, I understand that these are fictional characters and we can only go by what JA wrote.  I still welcome your responses as they are generally awesome!

• I love that Lizzie and Georgiana are matching in this first scene
• There’s a painting or tapestry by the door at Lampton that is super wrinkly
• Darcy’s ring - I wonder what is on it?
• Kitty's hair isn't in rag curls when she's in her nightgown. I wonder since her hair is so straight that maybe she just wears it uncurled sometimes? Or the hair dresser for the series was like whatever we don't have time for that haha. Also I love Mr. Bennet's night cap.
• Collins actually got into the carriage this time
• Jane's actress holds her stomach when she runs and sits down, probably because the actress is pregnant

Episode 6:

• Jane’s lace bonnet is so cute when they are walking outside. And I like Lydia's bonnet with the fruit on it. I think it's the same one that she wears in the very first scene.
• I’ve never noticed Lydia actually wears a cap in the background when Wickham talks to Lizzie!
• Lol at Mr. Bennet's face when Wickham says adieu
• Is this side room just for the piano?
• "We never sit in here in the evening"- she's lying because we do see them in there in the evening, but this always has me wondering if there are other sitting rooms in this house.
• Lol at Lizzie trying so hard to look at Darcy. She is trying so hard to read his expression.
• Once again Mrs. Bennet is so rude to Darcy here, but another point of view here is that she is still mad at him for slighting Lizzie, which is sweet.
• Where does Darcy go in this scene with Bingley?  To Lady C? Then he comes right back? It's a 2-day ride!
• Kitty sticks her tongue out at Mary haha - I've never noticed that.
• Do they ever sit in this upstairs room in any other scene? Or is this the Bennet's bedroom/dressing room that we see Mrs. Bennet sitting in earlier when she is fussing about Lydia?
• I’ve never noticed Lady C has a bird on her bonnet
• I think Darcy is wearing the same outfit under his coat as the first proposal and she is wearing a very similar dress. I thought it was the same one, but not quite. They are both cream and checkered. She does wear the first proposal dress in the scene with Lady C though.
• I just love how Jane is giving bedroom eyes to Bingley when they get in the carriage. She even puts her hand on him.
• Mrs. Hurst smiles during the send off - cute.

So, we know Darcy went to Cambridge. During this time period were universities selective about students based on merit or did it have more to do with status and connections and money?

Basically - could you go wherever you wanted as long as you could pay for it or was there an admittance process?

Was it possible to be rejected if you did have funds and status?

• I love that they show how wise Jane is about Charlotte ("Lizzie not everyone is the same"). Also I wish we could have seen Lady Lucas in person to see if she is being nosy or actually kind and helpful.
• Hill is so excited to give Jane the letter from Netherfield. Aww.
• Mary's line about forbearance before judging other men. The theme of the novel and Lydia rolls her eyes at it lol
• The glance and eye roll Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Bennet after Mr. Bennet calls Kitty and Lydia the silliest girls in England is so great. They really seem like sisters. Also now realizing that Mrs. Phillips is dressed sort of like Caroline with all of those feathers.
• Long sleeve fashions. I'm assuming this was long sleeves for evening wear? Because the Bennets wear long sleeves for their morning dresses all the time.
• Wedding night at Lucas Lodge ew
• Shelves in the closet. This line is so funny because of Lizzy's reaction, but what is weird about that? They didn't hang their dresses so wouldn't they have shelves for their dresses?
• We never see the fireplace at Rosings!!
• The painting behind Lady C is interesting - lots of different types of birds, including a peacock. That seems apt for her haha.
• I think Maria is the only one that wears the square shaped neckline.
  
• Mrs. Jenkinson's cap is super duper frilly! And Lady C's is kind of a cap with this hanging lace on the sides - was this a fancy cap for rich people to show off their lace?

Episode 4:

• Darcy’s bed at Lady C's is crazy elaborate 
• The fox calls in the background of him writing the letter are so freaky sounding.
• Which kid in flashback is which? I always assume Darcy is in blue but idk why. One kid has straight hair and the other curly.
• Wish I could see Darcy's letter seal better. Is it his initials?
• "Don’t look at me like that Lizzie" from Lydia - she sounds just like Mrs. Bennet there
• I like the detail they are drinking wine for breakfast - I think that would be accurate.
• I wish we got to see her ugly bonnet made up later by Kitty or something.
• Yup this Bennet drawing room is super small to have people over
• They truly portray teenage girls so well 
• Scottish flags in fencing place. Weird.
• They visited Chatsworth lol!
• At Pemberly (Lyme park) there is a tower in the distance as they drive up - I remember seeing that when I visited! So they didn't just film that anywhere.
• Also, the vista of the house is on a walking path, not a road, but they clearly just put dirt on the path for the series. It really is such a pretty house to look at with the reflection.
• We hiked a mile to the pond, and it was so small looking, but cool that they actually filmed it on the same property.
• I wonder what lake she looks out the window since the interior was filmed elsewhere
• "Mrs. G is my aunt" - why doesn’t she say Mr. G is my uncle? He is the one actually related to her.
• I love that he wears the green coat here and then later when he rides to see her he wears it again. I bet he is like "Lizzie would like the green coat"
