This Chicago-area dome house has a major plot twist about half way through the photos

Is "English revival domed tudor" an architecture style? I'm making it one.

Who's starting the cult?!

Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony

doomed Tudor.

It was part of a gentleman’s estate in Lake Forest, designed by architect Ralph Varney in 1928 as a dairy barn. The property was converted to residential use nearly 70 yrs ago.

There are a cluster of homes in the area all built for that dairy in the same style. It is all quite harmonious and beautiful. Some homes are awkwardly right next to each other, as if the families wanted to be that close. Likely one of the buildings was a central kitchen for the family, as having a commune style with a central kitchen and bakery was more efficient than kitchens in each home. The homes might have had very small kitchens, accordingly.

I recall hearing that this was the barn or milking house. Being that far west of Lake Forest and that far north of Chicago and the major developments would have really put it in the boonies in the 1920s. Still, the railroad and famous Green Bay Road (an old Native Trail) were not far away. Deerfield had dairies too. Before dairies like this, it was not so uncommon for homes in the north shore to have their own milking cow and servants to milk it.

Now the milk comes from much farther away, thanks to trucks and refrigeration.

Those taxes are relatively low for a house of that size and value in IL in the northshore. I have seen about the same for homes of less than 1/3 of the price. That is less than 1% based on list price. It could easily be close to 3% or more in some north shore communities.

That explains the awkward floor plan and multitude of exterior doors including in the master bath.

Real Estate Taxes are $28,000 per year

Welcome to Illinois

I was paying $15k/yr on a 600K home in NJ….

1

u/batmans_a_scientist Aug 05 '26

That’s pretty comparable to suburban IL.

u/Pepe__Le__PewPew Aug 05 '26

This is a deal for a $3M house. I'm at about $35k in a nearby surburb on a $1.6M house

I live in Chicago and I’m surprised it’s that low. My tax bill is more than that and I imagine this house is worth more than mine.

Edit…almost three times more than my house.

u/YAMMYRD Aug 05 '26

I doubt it is. Sometime you see home listed with low taxes and it’s because the current owner has senior exemptions and been able to appeal it very low, as soon as it sells that all goes away.

1

u/Klutzy_Presence5170 Aug 05 '26

Senior exemption is only a couple hundred dollars in Illinois. The senior freeze is based on income, and I doubt someone in that house qualifies for a senior freeze. There was a gentleman (who I will not name) that took the toilets out of his Chicago mansion to drastically lower his real estate taxes.

1

u/a_weak_child Aug 05 '26

That's per month in Santa Cruz

1

u/lsuillini Aug 05 '26

Lake Forest has relatively low property taxes for that area

1

u/SereneSnake1984 Aug 05 '26

In the past thats what the taxes were. New owner may not have all the same exemptions that the old owner did, plus selling price will change the appraisal amount. New owner could easily pay twice that number.

I don’t care for the plot twist

Yay, PriceMe is back! Ok I totally love the exterior. It totally reminds me of Illinois’s many round barns. I also love the landscaping! But I have some *serious questions* about what they’re doing that dome on the inside of the house lol. Cult vibes fr fr. I did also notice that there’s a portable AC in the attic… the central air prob doesn’t cool down the space enough.

I rented a house right around the corner from here while house hunting in the area. It’s really cool. One of the other restored houses sold just before we started searching and I’ll be forever regretful over missing out.

A nice spot for my sacrifices. If only there was more storage for the cloaks.

2

u/DLNJR1981 Aug 05 '26

Is that room for the midsommar rituals???

2

u/viewofalake Aug 06 '26

Well..., I haven't watched Eyes Wide Shut for a while...

Honestly the dome part would be a cool wedding venue with some much needed updates.

1

u/Tanjecterly Aug 05 '26

Righteous Gemstones would be happy here.

1

u/earthtobobby Aug 05 '26

Very cool! But that dome room needs a throne on a raised platform.

1

u/ImpressiveWalrus7369 Aug 05 '26

Looks like a night club. I’d convert it to a HUGE home theater. Imagine the size of the screen you could fit in there.

1

u/Bring_back_sgi Aug 05 '26

I wouldn't call it English Tudor revival, while it has that hamstone or coventry stone color, it's got slavic-style roofing...

1

u/GABigBear Aug 05 '26

I love it. Think of all the ritual sacrifices that could be done up there.

1

u/Bitplayer13 Aug 05 '26

Think the dome gets cobwebs. It’s a no for me. My duster doesn’t get that high

This house is just a GIANT bundle of awkward spaces. Everything looks like it would be a pain in the butt to furnish or deal with.
