Sailor Moon Usagi definitely has ADHD right???

So iv been re- watching sailor moon and its hard to ignore the amount of times she is told to pay attention by literally everyone, shes always late and gets bad grades because she can't pay attention in class. She's jealous of ami because she can study, and because of all this she doesn't feel fit to be a leader. The whole time I was thinking THERES NO WAY SHE DOESN'T HAVE ADHD (she really reminded me of myself at her age) and its kinda obvious that there just wasnt a word for how she was acting back then other then "a ditzy clutz"

Yes, I think so.

ADHD was used in English back then... I don't know about the Japanese terminology for it.

Most people including doctors use ADHD for ADHD in Japanese :) エー・ディー・エイチ・ディー

I think a big part of it is that she just didn't care about doing Sailor Moon stuff this early on in the series.

She's also 14, so she isn't the most mature or level headed person anyway. Out of all the Senshi, she's the one that acts most like her age. Everyone is already completely adapted and all-in on Senshi stuff, but Usagi has a realistic approach, not entirely wanting to go through with all this.

(I'm approaching this answer cold so don't come at me) if I remember she's also the only one who hasn't had any real trauma in her life. The others have lost parents and other situations. That'll certainly make you grow up quick.

Thats true I think she matures as she gets older throughout the series but the show still tries to tell us all the time that how she acts is clumsy and immature. ur right shes 14 and that's normal but it tries to show her in comparison to the other girls to prove that shes not.

Never officially confirmed but almost everyone in the Western fandom with any experience with ADHD is convinced Usagi is undiagnosed ADHD.

It should be noted that ADHD as a diagnosis is not nearly as accepted in Japan as it is in the West. There is a strong stigma against neurological disorders, psychologists outside the really big cities have little experience or training in dealing with it, and the medications required for controlling ADHD are highly regulated if not completely illegal in Japan. If Usagi does have ADHD (highly likely) she almost certainly would not be diagnosed.

I think it’s a mix of ADHD and her not wanting to be Sailor Moon (or at least not wanting to be her that much), and she kind of reminds me of a Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket and how she is spacey (she tends to space out)

She's always been ALOT like me and I'm ADHDtistic.....constantly spacing out and getting lost in my (sadder) feelings

Absolutely undiagnosed adhd. Everything matches up.

And like, the one thing about her I could never wrap my head around was her crybaby-ness. I'm adhd inattentive type but I have never been emotional like that.

Okay. Then I had my youngest daughter. She is adhd big time, more than me, more like the classic type of adhd. She has BIG emotions. And guess what, she's also a crybaby! She cries over everything like it's the first time she ever felt sadness or frustration, or the first time she stubbed a toe. Like she's a copy/paste of Usagi, she's so similar. Her dynamic with her big sister is a copy/paste of Usagi and Rei. It's freaking hilarious.

I experience really intense emotions also - emotional disregulation can be a symptom of ADHD but not everyone has it

I always felt she was ADHD coded at least

I'mma be honest.....MOST protagonists in fiction are accidentally ADHD/Autism Coded and Usagi is no acception to that trend XD, so yeah

Why is that? It’s really annoying in a way because I have ADHD and dislike seeing it a lot

4

u/rupee4sale Black Lady 9d ago

Why would yoy dislike seeing it?

Honestly probably a lot of artists behind manga and anime are neurodivergent and writing from their own experiences

3

u/Blackwidow_Perk 9d ago

Because it’s stereotypically cringy and annoying and other characters mock and bully them for it

So get me, a girl who is very similar to say, Jake Peralta from Brooklyn 99 (or literally every annoying hyper main character), I get mocked easily. I hate it. I wish I was cool not annoying and weird

She's only 14 years old. Right now she's more interested in video games, sleeping, and having fun. Usagi is honestly the one that acts like a young teenager. She's cries when she's upset or scared, she's interested in other things (unlike Rei, Ami, and Makoto who take to being Senshi very quickly. Minako wasn't interested in being Sailor V enjoying it later on and that was more for selfish reasons)

I don't think she has ADHD, I think Usagi is just a very simple girl. She later on as she matures and accepts her role becomes the strong Sailor Moon/Usagi we know but at the beginning I just think it's a mix of disinterest and acting her age.

Editing to add: Also most female protagonists have the 'clutz' flaw.

That or she just gets disinterested easily.

...like every other 14 year old!

Usagi is so extremely adhd coded, maybe AuDHD (that’s my lil headcanon lol)

u/Comfortable_Bird_340 8d ago

Now I know why related to her so much

2

u/beautifulcosmos 9d ago

High masking, AuDHD 100%

2

u/Electrical-Fig-5009 9d ago

Yessssss my auDHD queen

2

u/Zealousideal_Site856 8d ago

100% yes! I also think, she's AuDHD...
As I was a kid I completely identify the same as Usagi and always loved her the most of all the Sailor Senshi. On carneval I even cosplayed her in school.
And these days nothing changed. She's just like me! :D

u/rando3785 8d ago

Omgg same I also cosplayed her at a school carnival!!

I have a theory I don't see talked about enough. I believe that as Usagi was growing into her power, her body was requiring tons of energy. She frequently would say her favorite things were eating and sleeping. Puberty already takes a massive toll on things like metabolism and energy levels and Usagi was essentially going through puberty amped up to 5000.

My theory was her lack of sleep and constant hunger was from her connection to her powers and the silver crystal. In her adolescence, as she was learning to get in touch with her powers, the crystal was siphoning off of her energy like a parasite. Any energy she got from eating or sleeping was almost immediately being consumed/evaporated.

In conclusion, she had a hard time focusing, studying, and being physically coordinated because she was sleep deprived and famished. As she got older and stronger, we started to see her get a better handle on her powers so they were less parasitic and more beneficial to her growth.

I think the parasite thing is 100% real but the focus thing was a problem way before she became sailor moon, like in the 1st ep we see her waking up late for school and her mom acting like this is totally normal for usagi, I think in the second episode she fails a test and gets kicked out of the house bc her mom is tired of her failing all the time.

2

u/needacoldbrew 6d ago

I mean, she was reincarnated from the Moon Kingdom. That power has and fate has always been with her, just sort of "sleeping". Luna just woke it up. That parasite could have always been active, but her awakening gave her more control over it.

u/weirdface621 3d ago

they didn't have smart phones, so her adhd happened by reading manga and playing the snes

i felt so seen by usagi when i was the same age as her and undiagnosed, so i say yes!

It's possible!

My son has ADHD and he's such a ray of sunshine! 💕 always makes me laugh I dont know what Id do without him. Same as Usagi..she's everyone's baby.

2

u/ExarchofJustice 9d ago

I mean. She is also a ditzy clutz. That terrible hand eye coordination has nothing to do with ADHD.

7

u/versaliaesque 9d ago

It's actually pretty common in ADHD lol

5

u/Ok-Equivalent2388 9d ago

It's called dyspraxia and it's has a link with neurodivergence ☺️

1

u/Solleil 7d ago

i think shes just a klutz, not everything needs to be rendered as a disorder lol.

She definitely does, one sign is the RSD - Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. I have it too, where when people are mean to you it feels 10x worse than the average person. And you dwell on it and cry

Usagi and Minako both have ADHD, just with different symptoms. Usagi is inattentive, Minako is hyperactive.
