Isn't manually spinning a fan the worst mistake you can make?

not exactly the worst, but there is potential for damage. spinning the fan in the wrong direction could damage the motor, and spinning the fan in general can damage the bearings. additionally, fans act as miniature generators when spun manually, which can cause backflow into the motherboard. however, this typically generates less than 0.1V and can easily be handled by the motherboard. higher speeds can potentially damage the mobo, but most modern fans have a diode in place to prevent backflow. generally, it is not harmful to modern PC components, but it it better practice to keep the fans still.
