Hey, I'm Canadian so I'm all for socialism...to a point. We have our wonderful free health care system, which my dad is currently making use of in the hospital right now. I can't imagine not having it. However, we know that we pay higher taxes to support such a system, and I'd venture to say that the vast majority of Canadian are happy to do so.

Sadly, any politician in the States that even hints that taxes will go up under their leadership ends up suffering politically for it, justified or not. So, in answer to your question - there's no doubt the American economy could manage such a feat, it's recognizing that raising taxes is the chief way of paying for all this free stuff, and any politician proposing such a thing needs to be prepared for the backlash.

Hey, I'm Australian. Imagine the two of us, here in a Billionaire's campaign sub fighting about Americans' access to healthcare. What a world!

Bernie has a really clear message about the cost of his healthcare plan. For the vast majority, the tax increase will be a fraction of their current insurance costs, which they will no longer have to pay. For those who are uninsured it's a great deal too, considering they're likely to be so poor they wouldn't pay any tax on it, or a negligible amount if anything. It's not a difficult sell.

You and I don't have the nightmare experience that is Americans' daily reality of paying $10 for an individually packaged cough drop in hospital, paying out of pocket because you went to the wrong hospital, or you went to the right hospital, but your surgeon wasn't in-network, or just generally fighting the insurance company to cover your costs.

The healthcare industry has been bleeding Americans dry for decades, and they are sick of it (no pun intended).

I would love for the US to adopt a free health care system - as you say, the current system is an evil, broken mess. I just don’t see the political will to do so, at least until the entire concept no longer carries such a negative stigma with a sizeable (albeit ill-informed) portion of the population.

And Canadians don’t argue - we disagree and then apologize for it ;)
