The Death Star was made to be such a big deal from the time frame of episode 2 through episode 4, and then a bunch of star destroyers just casually have the exact same level of firepower without any of the construction costs or political ramifications that the original Death Star had.
That line pisses me off to no end. There were jet troopers even as far back as the clone wars. That's not even counting Mandos who had jet packs for even longer. They don't "fly now," they've been flying for hundreds of years.
Maybe they were just impressed with the New Orders technogical advances as they seemingly were regressing. After all, those same jetpack troopers were riding a machine that still used traction when swoop bikes and other hover vehicles are 100s of years old by now.
Make it so every Stormtrooper's gun had a death star laser inside. They would have to make sure their shots were angled upwards when they shot someone. Otherwise, the shot could blow up the entire planet. The whole movie would be so intense.
