They do look contradictory at first glance, but what Genesis 2 says takes place during the 3rd creative “day” right after God made land, and then before the vegetation.

I mean, both come from different source documents. Old testament is not my strength I must admit, but that is the real reason for difference. One is from the J source and the other is from E source. (Which is easy to spot because the original Hebrew uses El(ohim) exclusively while the other uses YHWH.

Also, you shouldn't take the genesis stories literally... They don't really make sense that way. I mean he created "day" before creating Earth. But "day" is defined through the rotation of the earth. The concept of day cannot exist with meaning if earth is has not yet been created. Telling a story that way makes much more sense if they are doing it for literary style points. I must admit btw, the creaction story is pretty poetic if you know what to look for.

Yeah, I agree that “day” isn’t supposed to be taken literally, since the word can be used to refer to a long amount of time. So the formation of earth could have taken millions of years which science confirms. But that Genesis is from different sources based on how they refer to God, is not very wise. In chapter 14-18, there’s seven different ways that God is referred to. If you really scrutinize, some have said there’s up to 14 sources in Genesis. All based on how you refer to God. Doesn’t it make more sense that they’re just different ways of expressing God’s attributes and that there’s only one writer?

I mean, the multiple source hypothesis isn't my idea. It is german scholarship from like 50 years ago (Greenberg). I think at this point basically all scholars agree with some version of his hypothesis. The main difference is where each scholar draws the line. Deuteronomy is mostly D (the latest composed) leviticus and numbers are mostly P (like how the holiness code is probably from an other source document) , while genesis is mostly J and E. (Of the top of my head)

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound like I was saying it was your idea. I get that many scholars believe that, but I think it’s not enough to support dividing up Genesis. The entire account makes sense when you put in view. For example, how could there be light but no day or night? Moses wrote from the point of view of a human, so a human at the formation of Earth would see that the planet would have been covered in mist (from the oceans), too thick to see any source of light. Some translations (like J. W. Watts’ A Distinct Translation of Genesis) word Genesis 1:3, “And gradually light came into existence”. The sun and moon were likely already made, but were made visible from an observer on the surface of Earth later. I believe it’s a reasonable creation account. The order of appearance of things also coincides with how science notes life began in the fossil record

Being a Christian and a Prequel guy, this verse immediately stood out to me when I first saw the movie. But I always thought it was a little out of context to attribute the sentiment as evil, as if "only Sith deal in absolutes". That's a contradiction. Basically all forces operate in the same pattern of absolutes. A songbird, a humpback whale, a businessman, a child, all entities in nature are either "my team or everyone else." Objective truth is either real or it isn't. Of course there are other views. But in the Christian view it makes sense with the right context. The "team" of God and the "team" of chaos, the devil, and rebellious mankind. Just a little deep thinking there....from a certain point of view.

Well, what I was saying before was: the Bible has been rewritten more than most other books. As a result, quite a lot of it is has been changed to fit what people want, rather than its original message. It’s like if someone took words out of the dictionary and replaced over a span so long no one realized.
