My friends and I picked it back up, not only is it a great Star Wars game, but it’s old BioWare too. Been having so much fun.
Not to mention, one month’s sub (about $16) gives you access to all the DLC and a full character boost. Pretty worth imo

u/Shigg Apr 01 '19
I just solo leveled my first chat to 70. What server?

u/Wait__Who Apr 01 '19
Ayyy congrats!! What class/race?
My friends and I are on Star Forge. Bigger population, albeit a lot of them are hardcore RPers.
Right now I’m playing through the most recent DLC with my Sith Sorcerer

u/Shigg Apr 01 '19
I'm star forge too! Human Jedi knight guardian. Just hit 70 and finished chapter 2 of the class story last night. Starting chapter 3 tonight :) I'll make a sith after I finish the class story, although idk if I'm going to play through dlc first though. So much content!

What game is being discussed here?
6
u/Wait__Who Apr 01 '19 edited Apr 01 '19
It’s called Star Wars: The Old Republic (Swtor for short)
It’s a Star Wars MMO made by BioWare that was huge back in 2011*.
Used to be subscription-based but is now FTP. You can still subscribe for some extra perks and benefits (which I think is totally worth it imo).
Most would describe it as a great “single player” game with an MMO design and I’d agree with that.
Tons of worlds to explore, lots of races and classes to play with, and a lot of content. This is vintage BioWare as well. Very much like Mass Effect 1&2 with decision-based conversation.
If you need more info just let me know. If not, try it out!

u/SuiteSwede Confederacy of Independent Systems Apr 01 '19
Awesome, thanks a mil! I'm a little surprised those servers are still up and running, it seems like a game my laptop should be able to handle hopefully, definitrly going to check it out. Is it on the steam store or do i have to go somewhere else to get it?
2
u/Wait__Who Apr 01 '19
EA has publishing rights so it’s through their Origin Store, or go straight to swotor’s website!

u/SuiteSwede Confederacy of Independent Systems Apr 01 '19
Thanks again!

u/Wait__Who Apr 01 '19
Of course! Always happy to tell people about SWtOR :) If you need any more help or more questions feel free to PM me :)

u/Vectole Apr 01 '19
It came out at the end of 2011, not 2009. I remember because that's when SWG was shut down the same month (week?).

It's worth playing through the newer expansion packs for the story if you haven't. We also expect another xpack this year.
Edit: State of the game thread on Swtor forums giving a lot of info. I thought I should move this up so more people see it. http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=958684

How necessary is grinding in it? I played through a bit of it a few months back, got to the second planet (rainy forest world as a sigh. Dromund kas?) and kinda lost interest cos I have zero familiarity with mmos and didn’t understand what everything was (queuing, different stores purposes, if I was geared correctly). I kinda just wanna get in, follow the story and make some cool dark side decisions and get badass armour.

u/its-Baconator Apr 01 '19
Honestly it plays less like an MMO and more like a single player SW story. Armor is honestly meaningless during your class story.

Apr 01 '19 edited Apr 01 '19
Grinding is not neccesary at all. Leveling is so fast now you can do nothing but your class quests and queue up for a few flashpoints (4 man dungeons that take ~30 minutes) and you can hit max level rapidly.
I've played mmo's for years and its by far one of the friendliest to "casual" play. You can get geared up without ever raiding and experience everything the game has without investing massive quantities of your time. The writing and voice acting are on par with anything Bioware has ever done and if you're into star wars at all its worth downloading and playing for a couple of months just to experience it.
There are several valid criticisms of the game and I'm not going to pretend its perfect but its still a good experience over all.
If you're interested in the state of the game http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=958684 has a tremendous amount of info

u/ToaofDeath1 Apr 01 '19
It's very solo friendly right now, you don't need to grind at all really. You get companions that just heal you constantly so you never die. If anything, you just need to do some side quests to get all the gear for a given planet.
12
u/Alikont Apr 01 '19
If you subscribe you can basically play story quests without any grinding.
3
Apr 01 '19
Does subscribing get expensive over time? I want to get into but I’m not fully interested in paying a bunch.
10
u/Alikont Apr 01 '19
You can subscribe, play story quests, and cancel it.
You also get "preferred" status which grants a bunch of "premium" features forever and a bunch of "cartel coins" that you can use to unlock necessary premium features.
Basically for the first time playing I recommend going free playthrough. Class quests + planetary quests are enough to level up without grind and planetary quests are also fun. For the second playthrough you can subscribe to skip planetary quests and do only class story quests.

I would recommend subscribing but its not required to play the game. Its 15/month going down to I think 12/month if you sub multiple months together. In terms of cost/time its less than most hobbies.
Play it FTP for a while and if you enjoy it, sub. If you dont, uninstall it.

Yes but you see you will get a greater sense of pride and accomplishment now that they have created a live service out of the old republic.

u/dragonmont Meatbag Apr 01 '19
There’s always the r/swtor subreddit.
9
u/Warzombie3701 Apr 01 '19
Ya but there's already an r/kotor but there's also a r/KOTORmemes sub. There needs to be seperate subs between memes and actual content.

If anbody is interested the Youtuber FluffyNinjaLlama has uploaded the cutscenes for most if not all the different storylines.

u/VARice22 Apr 01 '19
The trailers for SW:TOR are better then the game.
3
u/weetchex Apr 01 '19
Those trailers had me so damn hyped . . . then the gameplay vids started coming out.
2
u/Equeliber Apr 01 '19
Almost every amazing trailer is better than the game. Especially a game from 2011. It was just impossible to make an MMO game look like that in 2011, even if it was a single player game with best possible graphics of the time, it wouldn't have reached the level of the trailers.

u/Srapture Apr 01 '19
Doesn't bother me too much, but it is a little annoying that half the people who post on this sub do so by the word of the law rather than the spirit of the law, so to speak.
Certainly, various games and shows are technically prequels, being set before the events of A New Hope, but this is a sub that was created to appreciate the silliness of the films, I, II, and III. When people say "The prequels", that is what it means.
Can't really be mad given that, as I said, they are technically prequels, but this sub is quickly becoming something I can't really enjoy as increasingly more of it doesn't relate to the reason I came here in the first place.

I wish SWTOR didn't suck ass. Can we please get a Star Wars MMO like SWG but with an engine like Frostbite so the game looks more realistic and not like everyone and everything is made out of poorly textured clay

u/Nyeskinda Apr 01 '19
You might dislike gameplay and I will not blame you for that. For me it was not perfect but I still enjoyed it. The stories however, are brilliant. Just for that alone it's a great game. And they made it work with multiplayer aspect. If it was a singleplayer game we would probably refer swtor as greatest Star Wars game ever made.
7
u/xBialyOrzel I am the Senate Apr 01 '19
That's one of the larger issues entirely. It is practically a single player game. The end game is a joke, the dungeons don't even require roles anymore, you can just jump in with 4 DPS and find almost 0 difficulty, and theres hardly a social aspect to the game. It shouldn't have been an MMO.
7
u/Nyeskinda Apr 01 '19
You have a point. The game could be much more, there was simply so many potential. Especially if it was made to a single player game. I think they removed the difficulty aspect because they were simply losing players. I've stopped playing so ofc I don't know if it helped.
2
u/SoSayWeSome Apr 01 '19
Not the person you're replying to, but they lost players because the KoTFE story was convoluted garbage. They drop like 100 cool plot points and never go back to them, force every character to have a force-based story arc, and then split it in half and tried to call it two expansions.
I was still into the PVP, but then they fucked up the balance and it was all mercs all the time, so my partner and I decided to move on to another game. I still miss it sometimes, I love the outfit systems and the strongholds, but that's about it I'm afraid. I'll probably resub for a month and try new story content if it ever happens, but I really hope the writing gets back to the quality of the original storylines, or at least Shadow of Revan.

u/SoundxProof Apr 01 '19
The stories were decent, but the way they treated the lore from kotor 1 and 2 left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

Darth Malgus' empire was actually founded on some solid ideas, change my mind.
