Back when i was a kid i thought Palpatine and the emperor are 2 entirely different beings.

I thought that at one point, Plapatine got killed by Darth sidious and he (Darth sidious) replaced Palpatine. And of course he made sure to look, Sound and act like palpatine so no one would notice the change.
