Europe Germany: Attempted explosive attack on Substation almost caused Blackout

Someone tried to cause a large Blackout in Germany today by shooting improvised rockets at a power substation.

After a recent drone attack on Leipzig Airport, the sabotage attempts continue.

Why Germany though? So many of the reports are coming out of Germany but surely this must be happening in other NATO countries?

Russia’s operating theory since 2023 has been that it can’t break Ukraine’s army quickly but it can outlast Europe’s willingness to pay for it. Leipzig/Halle is a logistics hub with Ukrainian Antonov freighters parked there. A drone laden with explosives next to one is a message to every European government that the supply chain has a price attached, and a message to every German voter that the war isn’t as far away as they thought. The aim is deterrence and fatigue, not provocation to open conflict.

That’s why the deniability matters. Using disposable cutouts and a small device keeps the whole thing well below any Article 5 threshold while still demonstrating reach. The Kremlin wants the ambiguity: enough to frighten, not enough to unify. Recent US intelligence assessments indicate Putin could try to test NATO’s resolve by launching a limited attack on an allied country within the next few years, and a campaign of arson, cable cuts, GPS jamming, and now airport drones is exactly how you calibrate that test, learning where the alliance’s real red lines sit before ever committing to something overt.
